Miss Rowlands: SCIENCE

1. Needs to be 1 page (hand written or typed). If it is typed you can use 14 pt font (Times New Roman). Should be single spaced. Both the summary and opinion should be no less than 150 a piece (150 word summary, 150 opinion). Must be in blue or back ink. * No credit will be given to an article that is less than 300 words* 2. Must include proper headings. 3. Must be in proper format (refer to example). 4. Must be CURRENT (within the past 2 years). 5. Must be about SCIENCE! 6. You must attach a copy of the article to the current event assignment. 7. I am letting you choose the article, choose wisely. If you do not have access to a current event Miss Rowlands will provide you with one. 8. The current event is due every other Friday. 9. Include both the summary and opinion 10. You will receive 5 bonus points if you read it aloud to the class. 11. I will NOT be printing anyone’s articles or current events out the day it’s due.

On the back side of this paper is an example of what a current event should look like if it were typed. It also includes helpful hints of what you need to do. READ CAREFULLY! Title of the Article Name Source (Name of Website, Magazine, Etc.) Date Period #

______Summary: Here is where you write a paragraph (no less than 7 sentences/150 words). Information in here is strictly factual. You may want to quote people from the article in this section. Do remember Miss Rowlands has not read your article; it is your job to inform her of what you have read. Do not plagiarize; Miss Rowlands knows how you speak. If you choose to use outrageous words in which you do not know that are directly from the article Miss Rowlands will question you (punishment for plagiarism will not be pleasant…. ZERO GRADE). A helpful hint in writing a summary: for every paragraph in the article you should have a sentence about it. Do remember a summary is a basic overview of the information presented.

(SKIP 1 LINE ONLY) Opinion: Here is where you write a paragraph (no less than 7 sentences/150 words). This is the section of the current event where you tell me your feeling about the issue in the current event. Can you agree with the research? Would you have done things differently? Do remember to use facts to back up your opinions from the article, make references. Why do you think the author wrote the article, and why was it important enough that you are writing about it? One sentence stating why you chose it. Writing because Miss Rowlands provided me with one is not a good answer.

***Note: You should not struggle to turn in a current event, you have 2 weeks to work on it and hand it in. If you are a slacker/procrastinator/busy person try to turn it in early. Please try not to get ahead too much (you over achievers who will hand in multiple at a time). To avoid Miss Rowlands getting overwhelmed hand them in a timely manner, a few days ahead of time works as well.
