Firstly a farewell to Lowri from Room 1, and her family. We wish her all the best in her new school.

A congratulations is due to our triathlon team who competed at the Kaipara Triathlon last Friday – their results are recorded further on in this newsletter. Not only did they do very well in their placings but they also showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Go Waioneke! Many thanks to Darin for organising our competitors for this event, to Maria for being our co-ordinator on the day, and to all our wonderful parent helpers who transported, supervised our kids and ran the swimming section 

Waioneke is a Cool School I thought I’d take this opportunity to inform our community a bit more about our Peer Mediation Programme. Waioneke is officially a “Cool School.” Last year our staff participated in the Cool Schools training, and all of our students have practised the skills of Peer Mediation as part of their classroom health programmes. The purpose of the Cool Schools Peer Mediation Programme is to teach how to use conflict scenarios as an opportunity to build positive relationships with others. The programme was written in 1991 by the Peace Foundation and has been introduced to 2/3 of all schools in New Zealand. The mediation process is non-violent, constructive, co-operative and focuses on reaching a negotiated solution that is mutually acceptable to all parties concerned.

The Cool School programme fosters the development of self-esteem and leadership skills, is proactive, helping to prevent bullying and other levels of conflict and focuses on building positive relationships with others.

In class the students have learnt about:  Active Listening  Using “I” Statements and Affirmations  Recognising Different Responses to Conflict  Open and Closed Questions  The Role of a Mediator  And Practised the Mediation Process

Students are taught 4 rules for mediation: 1. Listen without interrupting (each party has a turn to share their side) 2. No name calling or put downs 3. Tell the truth 4. Agree to solve the problem Each break we do have a staff member on duty, and during lunch times we also have a wonderful group of students who are rostered on as Peer Mediators in the playground. Our Peer Mediators deal with the little events that occur between students, largely in terms of friendships and disagreements about rules and sharing. They model the mediation process and support students to develop their own solutions. We are very proud of our mediators and thank them for enhancing our school environment. Thank-you to all the students who were elected as Waioneke Peer Mediators;

Have a great week Linda
