The film adaptation of Girl, Interrupted, as the poster sites, is “based on a true story,” and you have read that story. However, the crux of adaptation is reinvention. Like the book, it’s 1967, a time when women in this country were trying to break away from the stereotypes and expectations of the past, and the prospect of being “more than your mother ever dreamed of” was simultaneously celebrated and condemned, rewarded and punished. In other words, it was a confusing time for everybody. Dealing with this world of mixed expectations is Susanna and her fellow “voluntary” inmates at Claymore, an exclusive institution for troubled young women.

Think about some of the reinventions that take place between book and film. How do the subjects and characters in the film differ from the book? Do they meet your expectations? Were they a surprise, good or bad?
