1. General Description of the Trade Study
The attitude determination system needs sensors in order to determine the attitude of the s/c. A magnetometer has already been chosen and it is desirable to add rate gyros to output the s/c rotational rate. The study compares two types of rate gyros that are feasible for our project and makes a selection
2. Options
2.1. BEI technologies Horizon Gyrochip
This is an angular rate sensor that comes in a machined package and outputs an analog signal relative to the spin rate about its axis.
3 of 5 Document Control Heading – DINO-ADCS-TPS-GYRO 4/6/18
2.1.1. Pros
1.1.1.1. Size: the gyrochip is small and lightweight with low power consumption.
1.1.1.2. Inexpensive for industry standards
1.1.1.3. Resolution of 0.004°/s.
2.1.2. Cons
1.1.1.4. While inexpensive for industry standards it still costs $1000 for a set of three sensors
2.2. Analog Devices ADXRS150 angular rate sensor This is a MEMS rate gyro. It is simply an integrated circuit chip that outputs an analog signal for the rotation about its yaw axis.
2.2.1. Pros
1.1.1.5. It is just an IC chip that mounts on a PCB.
1.1.1.6. Resolution up to .004 °/s.
1.1.1.7. Very inexpensive at $40 per chip.
2.2.2. Cons
1.1.1.8. The company is not very forthcoming about replying to questions.
3. Other Unexplored Options
3.1.

4.1. Very simple to add to the s/c design since it attaches to a PCB we were already going to need.
4.2. Very inexpensive chip allows for extra purchases and more testing.
