Wilkinson Eyre Architects Practice Profile New Bodleian Library Wilkinson Eyre Architects Practice Profile 26.2.2010 Wilkinson Eyre Architects is one of the UK’s leading architectural practices, with a portfolio of national and international award‐winning projects. Its designs are widely recognised and have received extensive media, public and professional acclaim and numerous awards including, uniquely, the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture in two consecutive years, for the Magna Project in 2001 and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in 2002. Based in London, the practice has an excellent reputation for designing cultural buildings and exhibition spaces, its past projects including The Making of the Modern World Gallery, The Wellcome Wing and the Challenge of Materials Gallery at the Science Museum in London, the Magna science adventure centre in Rotherham, a series of projects at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea. Wilkinson Eyre’s architecture is based on an informed use of technology and materials and combines a commitment to the spirit of the new with an awareness of context. Our approach to design is based on the establishment of a clear brief and a legible working diagram through close liaison with the client from the earliest stages of a project. The practice’s reputation is founded on a commitment to quality, programme and value for money which is demonstrated by a number of repeat commissions for leading clients. Specificity is a strong theme in our work, enabling us to create buildings which respect their unique context but which also speak of the character and concerns of their users. Current projects include the spectacular Guangzhou International Finance Centre in China, two of the world’s biggest glasshouses in Singapore for the Gardens by the Bay project, the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth, a Maggie’s Centre in Oxford, the remodeling of gallery space and the creation of a new learning centre at the Museum of London, and two buildings for the University of Oxford: a new building for the Earth Sciences Department and the transformation of the New Bodleian Library into a library for Special Collections with public exhibition space. The Conference has gradually become a place of knowledge production and, especially, a place for international meeting from which to convene relevant voices around the proposed topic at each edition. We would like to thank all participants for their work and trust, as well as the members of the Scientific Committee whose effort and commitment to their tasks has made it possible for all the pieces to fit together. Critic|all is a call for all. An appointment that, beyond the scope of each edition, we hope will be able to enhance a more general debate on the role of Criticism in the present context of architecture.
