Chair Chat

It was good to see so many of you at the AGM last month – even better to see the level of interest in the Activity Exchange on-line diary system which we hope to introduce in the next few months. We were delighted to welcome the National Treasurer and National Events organiser, as well as Peter Norris of Birmingham IVC who provided an excellent presentation and demonstration of Activity Exchange. Thanks to Leigh-Anne for organising this and for spearheading the move to on-line systems. Gail has worked tremendously hard alongside Peter N to get the new website set up before completing her term as Webmaster. She has now handed over to Colin Dunn and Sheila P, who will be sharing the responsibility. There are a few more issues to sort out before we launch the new system, but we hope to get things moving within the next few months, possibly ahead of schedule – watch this space!

Apart from Webmaster, we were pleased to welcome Loretta M and Marian G onto the new committee, covering Publicity and Membership respectively.

4 Back to the present – and as we are still running with the present diary system, it’s worth pointing out that the final date for entering next month’s events is a few days earlier than usual – so start thinking Christmas now (yes, I know), and let’s have a good run up to the festive season.

You can start by booking with Anthony for the Christmas dinner which is on 7 December, only a few weeks away. We are fortunate in securing The Woodman at such a reasonable rate as this venue has been outside our budget in previous years and may be again in the future. Anthony will need your menu choice and payment by the end of this month, so don’t delay.

With Autumn well and truly upon us and Christmas around the corner, thoughts turn to brisk walks, cosy pubs and good company. Enjoy November!

Membership Renewals

It’s renewal time again, and you should receive your renewal form with this newsletter. Do remember that subscriptions are due immediately as our membership year runs from 1 October. Please return your form and cheque promptly to Marian, as this will make her job so much easier. We also need to know what details you wish to be published on the next Membership List, so please indicate this on the form.

As we move to Activity Exchange, e-membership will be replaced with on-line membership, so the assumption is that if you sign up for e- membership, you are prepared to move to on-line membership at a later date. Those who sign up for postal membership will continue to receive a printed programme, though this may be in a different format eventually. Anyone renewing after 11 December will not have the

5 option of switching from e-membership to postal membership, as significant copying and postage costs will already have been incurred.

We expect to run Activity Exchange alongside the current format initially, and detailed timings of how we transition from one to the other are still to be worked out. We’ll keep you posted on progress.

One other decision made at the AGM was to discontinue the category of Associate Membership, as members of another IVC group will soon be able to see our events on-line through Activity Exchange, and in the meantime we continue to e-mail our programme to Manchester and Leeds IVCs for circulation to their members.

Fishy Story

It was good to have so many walks in the programme last month. David’s walk on a beautifully sunny day attracted good numbers. The weather looked less promising for Jim’s walk from Settle the following week, but after a dry walk up to Stainforth Force, we were rewarded by the sight of salmon leaping up over the falls to reach their spawning grounds – something I have never seen before.

Which just goes to show - the most unpromising days can turn into something memorable. If you don’t go, you’ll never know!
