I asked my then-8-year-old son after a couple of weeks of an exhausting pattern of teasing then weeping….This question was part of a true story I told students during Class Meeting. My articulate older son, answered with some passion, “To protect the feelings of your Precious Younger Boy!” Students agreed that this was my motivation, and Bradley tenderly offered, “You were trying to teach empathy.” Students also understood why big brother might be driven to tease: A scholar who has many brothers suggested that this was part of the “cycle of brothers.” Many said that older kids are often jealous of the attention their younger siblings get. I shared with students that I had many talks with Precious Big Brother, truly sympathizing with his feelings, imploring him to care about someone littler; I also made a point to spend more time with him. Sometimes, though, I had to punish him. So, what broke the endless teasing in this cycle of brothers? Here’s how things changed: I said to my beloved older son, “This is about you….What you say to others says something about you.” I let him know that my job as a parent is to raise him to be the finest person he can be. “It is my job to feed you, give you a wonderful education, provide you with shelter, but more importantly, to see that you are a good and noble person.” When you are unkind, you are not being who you were meant to be, I told him. Over the years, Big Brother has coached his sibling’s teams, cheered them on in school, sports, and music, and become an admirable young man they look up to. Every day in school, like their hard-working moms and dads, we, too, hope to help your children become their most noble selves. Curriculum

Math – Students will take a money assessment on Monday. We will continue to study multiplication and division 4s facts. During the week, we will begin our unit of study on bar graphs and line plots.

Spelling -- This week’s list will feature words that include the short and long “u” sounds.

Grammar – Students will study nouns, distinguishing between common and proper nouns.

Reading – We will be reading “The Ballad of Mulan”. Students will learn comprehension strategies and perform other literacy-based activities connected to this story.

Writing -- Students will complete their paragraphs about their favorite sport or physical activity. Students will write a descriptive paragraph about their decorated pumpkins, which will be read on Halloween. Students will also take a benchmark writing assessment later in the week, which will demonstrate students’ understanding of the writing process thus far.

Social Studies – Students will be placed in groups to research a specific landform. Students will define the landform, describe its characteristics, provide examples of animals that inhabit it, and identify prominent U.S. examples. Wishing you a beautiful week!
