CALL FOR INTERNS: TWO PAID INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE!!

By Laurie Bedord, Future Ag Communicators Chair

The American Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA) is accepting applications for two 2017 AAEA Summer Internships.

The first undergraduate college student in agricultural communications will be chosen to work as an editorial communications intern for Farm Journal Media in Mexico, Missouri.

“The intern will be involved with a number of the properties within Farm Journal Media, including the multimedia platforms of Farm Journal, and Top Producer,” says Susan Luke, Farm Journal Media. “He or she will write and post news items for the websites and print, and will be involved in social media for the brands.”

The student chosen will learn how to deploy enewsletters and how to curate and aggregate content for digital sites and social media. In addition, the individual will have the opportunity to attend meetings and conferences with staff members.

“The intern will work closely with experienced editors as well as younger staff members,” notes Luke.

As part of Farm Journal Media, the intern needs to have excellent writing and communication skills. “He or she should have the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team,” she says. “The ability to work on several projects simultaneously will be a plus, including experience with video editing tools such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier.”

A second student will be selected for the AAEA marketing communications internship and will work for Broadhead + Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“Agency experience can be extremely hard to come by, and even more competitive to gain as a student,” says Marguerite Haggerty, Broadhead + Company. “Completing an internship at our agency has the potential to be an invaluable work experience for the intern.”

Candidates for the Broadhead + Company internship should possess strong writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to work in a close knit, collaborative, team environment.

The intern will be involved in a variety of experiences and projects as a part of the Broadhead + Company team. Some of the responsibilities will include writing and interviewing client experts for content development to be used in print and digital formats and planning activities and arrangements for events. He or she will also attend and participate in client meetings, media training sessions, presentations, project management meetings and brainstorming sessions.

Each intern will earn a $4,500 stipend for approximately 10 weeks and another $1,000 toward the cost of attending the Agricultural Media Summit in Snowbird, Utah, July 22 to 26, 2017. Both internships are made possible through grants from the AAEA Professional Improvement Foundation.

The internship application is available at the AAEA Web site (ageditors.com).

All applications must be postmarked or emailed no later than Monday, February 6, 2017.
