Course Description Art II is a project-based course. Vocabulary will be introduced through class activities and projects. Along with vocabulary, artists will be introduced with each project. Quizzes and tests will be given along with the projects.

SKETCHBOOK A sketchbook will be kept and utilized both in class notes, drawings, and for homework. There will be one major sketchbook project consisting of seven separate drawings due later in the quarter. Sketchbook assignments must be organized in the sketchbook. Students may utilize both the front and back of the pages in their sketchbook if they so desire. A rubric will be given for the major sketchbook assignment and must be turned in with the sketchbook. Sketchbook assignments will not be accepted on loose or lined paper.

INSPIRATIONS Students will be required to find a variety of inspirations to use throughout the course from a list given to them by Ms. Payne. Inspirations may be collected digitally through a photography folder on their device, or neatly trimmed from newspapers, magazines, or printed internet images (no snack wrappers, trading cards, or 3D objects accepted- NO EXCEPTIONS.) Students are responsible for keeping up with all inspirations. Ms. Payne recommends that students do not sentimental items. Inspirations must be collected outside the classroom and checked weekly. Inspirations will count as a homework grade.

CONTEST OPORTUNITIES Students will have the opportunity to enter contests throughout the year. Contests will be announced throughout the year.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES  Develop an understanding for all aspects of creating art from start to finish.  Develop an understanding and appreciation of art history.  Explore elements of line, shape, form, value, color, space, and texture.  Apply principles of balance, movement, rhythm, emphasis, contrast, and unity.  Design, develop, and create original pieces of art.  Improve drawing skills through practice.

ALL PROJECTS DUE ON TUESDAY MAY BE TAKEN HOME ON FRIDAYS TO COMPLETE OR COMPLETED AFTER SCHOOL ON TUESDAYS WITH MS. PAYNE. PROJECTS MUST BE COMPLETED AND TURNED IN TO THE BOX FOR YOUR CLASS PERIOD NO LATER THAN TUESDAY AFTERNOON BY 3:30.

MATERIALS  Binder with one tab for Art (labeled based on class period)  8.5x11 hardbound or spiral sketchbook (no paper bound sketchbooks)  Ruler  Pencils  Notebook Paper  Markers (optional)

NOTE: I provide markers for certain projects only, as marker ink runs out quickly if used for every project. Students may use their markers on projects in which I do not provide them.

Classroom Rules and Consequences  Be on time and prepared for class *Students may not leave the classroom after entering even if the tardy bell has not rung* *Being excessively tardy will result in detention after school*  Respect others and their materials  Always do your own work (USE YOUR IMAGINATION)  Keep your area clean  Manage your class time

Grading

Grading is based on effort, not artistic skill. A student should follow directions; hand in completed assignments on time, and present work that demonstrates the highest quality of that student. A separate class participation grade will be given weekly. The students must come prepared for class, behave appropriately in the classroom, use class time wisely, and put away all materials/clean work area properly. Student evaluations must be signed by a parent and returned.

Students’ grades are compiled from three areas

HOMEWORK (10%)- Sketchbook (50 points), Inspiration (5 points) ALT ASSESS (30%) – Small Projects, Quizzes, Bell Work, Participation, Activities, Lab EVALUATIONS (60%)- Weekly Projects, Tests
