Job Description:

Senior Development Worker – Health & Wellbeing

Reporting to: Health & Wellbeing Programme Manager

Work pattern: 22.5 hours per week. Fixed term until September 2017. Based at the Town Hall, Eastbourne The Organisation

In December 2013 Newhaven Community Development Association (NCDA) changed its name to Sussex Community Development Association, to better reflect its work.

NCDA was founded in 1997. Its main aim was to develop sustainable community- based regeneration initiatives addressing the economic, environmental, and cultural and community needs of Newhaven, particularly addressing the needs of those most vulnerable in the community.

SCDA runs a range of projects aimed at supporting the involvement of the whole of the community. Funding has been secured from a range of sources including European, Lottery and charitable trusts as well as contracts to deliver services and run projects in Newhaven and elsewhere in East Sussex. These include:

Employability – supporting unemployed people across East Sussex, specialising in those who find it hardest to find and sustain paid work.

Advice & Inclusion – delivering a variety of services aimed at promoting inclusion for BME communities; supporting people at risk of anti-social behaviour and hate crime; and offering access to a range of specialist advice provision through partners.

Health & Wellbeing – delivering a range of services around food; green and open spaces; promoting physical activity and mental health and wellbeing in the community.

Community Development – delivering targeted and general Youth provision locally; raising the profile of communities in which we work through regular community events; offering a suite of Family Learning and Inclusion activities for parents and carers of Under 5’s. We also manage Denton Island Nursery which Ofsted has registered as ‘Outstanding’.

Care & Support – SCDA’s newest work area which offers high quality day care, activities and other services for older people both referred via ESCC Adult Social Care and self-referred.

SCDA has a strong track record in partnership working and in the quality of service delivery to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in the community: helping the community help itself. The context of the job

The organisation, though fairly small in terms of staff, continues to grow. As a result of its size, however, SCDA expects all members of staff to demonstrate flexibility within their specified job role and offer continued support to all other team members as and when required.

From time to time the post holder will be required to work evenings and weekends to meet service user and community needs. Additional remuneration is not applicable, as time off in lieu may be granted in accordance with the policy.

The purpose of the role of Senior Health & Wellbeing Development Worker is to support the Programme Manager in the operational management of Health & Wellbeing projects. The role takes a strategic approach to the co-ordination and delivery (in conjunction with partners) of a broad range of community based initiatives, which cover the health & wellbeing needs of all age ranges and backgrounds, with a particular focus on alcohol & substance recovery.

The post holder will have line management responsibility of staff as appropriate and agreed within the role, and oversee the welfare and wellbeing of any volunteers, student and or work placements.

Additionally responsible for collaboration on funding bids to support new and maintain existing service provision and activities, the post holder will also design, deliver, evaluate and report to various funders and partners with regard to activities and services. Main Tasks

Development & delivery of services: . Develop approaches which ensure SCDA’s services and activities are accessible to individual’s, groups and communities currently excluded from existing services in East Sussex . Develop a range of services and appropriate activities with colleagues, taking reference from a range of working groups and from other SCDA project areas and SCDA’s member groups . Design and deliver a range of community-based health and wellbeing initiatives, projects and events as needed and funding allows . Develop funding bids to support activities, services or events using partnerships, networks and community groups where necessary to assist. . In conjunction with the Programme Manager maintain a strategy for promoting and communicating the work of SCDA Health & Wellbeing community based initiatives to partner organisations, a range of funders and the wider community of East Sussex

Partnership & coordination: . Support effective joint working across statutory, voluntary and community sector services, organisations and groups in the organisation of health and wellbeing events and activities for SCDA . Ensure by effective partnership working with a range of appropriate educational and service providers a comprehensive training offer that meets community need . Enhance existing links and services with local GPs through advertising and promotion of services provided . Promote and increase the use of the Health & Wellbeing services and activities by identifying and liaising with potential user groups . Develop educational, health and well-being services in East Sussex by maintaining & increasing links with other providers of educational, health and Well-being services . Develop initiatives and services and collaborate on funding applications . Identify fund raising opportunities and write bids to obtain the available funds

Senior Development Worker – Health & Wellbeing Page 3 . Develop and maintain services, such as workshops, training courses and one to one training provision . Continue publicity and marketing of the services or activities . Develop and maintain a multi-agency and partnership approach to addressing the needs of service users in the local areas . Actively engage service users in the consultation process around the development and implementation of new and existing services . Ensure all venues and events are fully risk assessed and make regular updates to stored documents and with HR

Monitoring & Reporting: . Monitor and report to a range of funders on evaluation and measuring successes, progress and outcomes as necessary for both existing and new services . Create reports as required for steering or partnership groups or as directed by line manager . Support, promote and facilitate best practice in establishing and maintaining good links with key partners from health, social services and voluntary sector

Supervisory:  Conduct regular supervision with any direct reports  Hold monthly project team meetings  Provide regular supervision for volunteers  Attend staff team meetings to increase motivation, loyalty and job satisfaction and to encourage a strong team spirit  Ensure all internal HR processes, such as annual leave, sickness and TOIL are followed correctly in respect of self and project team

Any other duties deemed necessary to provide a quality service including: . Meet regularly with the Health & Wellbeing programme Manager for supervision and reviews and take responsibility to follow through agreed areas of work . Attend team meetings, steering groups and partnership forums as appropriate . Work to support effective communication with other SCDA project areas and joint working opportunities . To ensure that all requirements outlined in the Sussex Community Development Association personnel procedures and policies are personally adhered to . To be familiar with and conform to responsibilities under the Data Protection Act . To be familiar with and conform to responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act in relation to service users, colleagues, self and others

Essential qualifications  Relevant professional qualification or significant experience that demonstrates competency in this work area  Evidence of maintaining skills and knowledge-base

Desirable qualifications . Professional qualification in health, wellbeing or related discipline . Degree or similar level

Experience:  Two years minimum professional experience of developing, delivering and evaluating services in the community  Experience of working in a complex, multi agency environment  Experience of partnership and inter-agency working  Supervisory experience, including experience of supporting/supervising staff, volunteers/community messengers.

Essential Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:  Knowledge of o relevant statutory, voluntary and community based providers and services in the local area  Able to o co-ordinate a complex, multi-disciplinary service o plan and deliver services to local people in the community whilst giving priority to community involvement and support o lead innovation and motivate the local community in change processes o manage a team o prioritise and manage major tasks with accuracy and in accordance with specified timetables and guidelines o develop and implement the establishment of new projects  Skills o report writing skills o strong organisational and workload management skills o Microsoft Office skills
