Read 180 Syllabus  What is Read 180?

Read 180 is an intensive, research-based, reading program that addresses your individual needs through direct reading instruction, technology, and support. In this class, each of you are here for varying needs and skills, based on your Lexile score. You are expected to respect each other and not make fun of another's ability or struggles. It will NOT be tolerated.

 What is a Lexile score?

A Lexile score is a scientific approach to measuring reading ability and the difficulty of reading materials. The Lexile Framework includes a Lexile measure and the Lexile scale.

 A Lexile measure represents both the difficulty of a text, such as a book or an article, and an individual’s reading ability. Lexile measures are expressed as a number followed by an “L” (e.g., 850L), and are placed on the Lexile scale.  The Lexile scale is a developmental scale for measuring reading ability and text difficulty, ranging from below 200L for beginning readers and beginning-reader materials to above 1700L for advanced readers and materials.

Your Lexile score is determined by taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory. You will take the SRI several times over the course of the school year. Your growth in this class, and overall reading performance, will be determined by those Lexile scores. You will see a change in your Lexile score as we move throughout the year – hopefully in the positive direction. An increase in Lexile score will result in placement out of the class. The definition of “increase” will be specific to each student.

 How does the class operate?

Read 180 is a 90 minute class (double period) in which you will have the opportunity to work with teachers, peers, and on your own. The class will rotate every 20 minutes and typically follow the below schedule:

 Journaling for 3-5 minutes

 Large group instruction – we will meet as a whole class for the first 20 minutes of class.

 Small group instruction – you will work in small groups on a specific skill or story with your teacher.

 Computer – you will complete workshops through the Read 180 software. The use of the internet during this time will NOT be tolerated.

 Independent Reading – you will be responsible for independently reading a certain number of books per quarter. You will be given 20 minutes of time, most days, to independently read and complete your required daily reading log.

 Large group wrap-up – at the end of class, all students reconvene in the large group for wrap up. Ms. Yocum [email protected] September 2013

*You will also be responsible for completing writing assignments and projects throughout the year.

Bathroom breaks will only be permitted during your large group and small group time. You will NOT be given permission to use the bathroom during your independent reading and computer time. Due to the length of this class, you will be given a 5 minute bathroom/water break on a daily basis. This is a privilege that is not required by the teacher to provide. If you abuse this privilege, for example, not returning on time, leaving the general classroom area, creating a noise disturbance in the hallway, etc., it will be revoked.

 How will I be graded?

Your grade in this class will be generated from a number of components. Your grades will include the following:

 Success zones completed through the computer program – all areas will be considered from your success zones, please take it seriously!

 Writing assignments: rBook, journal

 Independent reading - you will be given short tests or a book project, on each reading, after you have completed it.

 Class participation – you are expected to be a part of class and contribute to discussions. Each class you will be given the opportunity to earn 1 point towards participation. Class participation points will be deducted at the teachers’ discretion.

 Book logs – these will be completed, daily, from your independent reading books. 20 minutes of reading = 1 book log!

 Homework assignments
