CLA Library History Interest Group

CLA Library History Interest Group Business Meeting Notes Saturday, 8 November 2014 7:15 – 8:15 a.m.

Oleg Kagan, David McFadden, and Cindy Mediavilla, were present.

There was as discussion of proposals for Spring Fling 2015. It was decided to propose a workshop on researching and writing library histories. Debbie Hansen and Cindy Mediavilla were suggested as speakers along with possibly Mike George of the Torrance Public Library. A library in the Palos Verdes Library District was suggested as a possible venue for this day long workshop. Cindy Mediavilla will take the lead in submitting the proposal by the 24 November deadline.

There was also a discussion of programs for the CLA Conference 2015 in Pasadena. Oleg Kagan suggested and agreed to work on a program about library architecture focusing on changes over the years. It was proposed after discussion that perhaps a program on stories from the Library Hall of Fame honorees should be presented every five years. A program of this type was present in 2012 after the first group of honorees was chosen. Another possible topic was about women in librarianship.

It was suggested that perhaps a tour could be arranged in conjunction with the architecture program. One possible time would be the day after the conference.

There was a confirmation that oral histories have been conducted for the Infopeople’s California Library Leaders Memory Project. Debbie Hansen’s completed history projects were also mentioned but nothing was proposed or decided about how to make them available.

Although the Library Hall of Fame Committee is a CLA Presidential appointment, there was agreement that that current committee of Letitia Bowles (Hemet Public Library), Debra Hansen (SJSU SLIS), David McFadden (Southwestern Law School), Cindy Mediavilla (California State Library) (Chair), Kimberlee Wheeler (Butte County Library) along with Oleg Kagan should be considered as members for 2015.

David McFadden will continue on a chair for 2015 and Cindy Mediavilla will continue on as program chair.
