RAC IV SECTION STATUS REPORT
SECTION: Southwest Texas
SUBMITTED BY: Joan Labay-Marquez, Chair
How many council meetings were held since last RAC: One. Our officers met this past weekend to establish our goals and objectives for the year. We plan to begin having quarterly general membership meetings with the first one in late October or early November. We will alternate venues in San Antonio and Austin for the membership meetings in order to accommodate our membership’s geographic different locations. We are looking forward to having our first general membership meeting in San Antonio at the newly renovated Scobee Planetarium and Learning Center and we are currently making arrangements to give members the opportunity to tour the facility.
Please list the vacant council member positions: None; We needed a Membership Chair and Aubrey Mason, Vice Chair will be filling this position.
Section Goals: Our member, Jon Cutshall, will be organizing a High School Wing Design Contest in May at the Hondo Airport. Our section received CAT III funds to support the program and the section will also be providing financial support for the event. In June, we will have a Mars Rover Celebration Event in Boerne and will invite elementary and middle school students to participate. Tentative plans are to include Buzz Aldrin as the MC for the event. Some members are also participating in a Family Fun Fly event in October at Joshua Springs in Kendall County to support the local model airplane organization.
Education Outreach: Plans are being made to facilitate Engineers as Educators workshops within the region.
Public Policy Activities: Public policy activities are being planned for the 2015 Texas Legislative Session.
Other/Concerns: We hope to organize an official student chapter at UTSA this year and partner with local community colleges that support aerospace careers. Our top priority will be to inspire and engage our membership to participate in our upcoming meetings and programs.
