Instructions Appreciating poetry In this unit, students listen to, read and view a range of poems, songs, anthems and odes from different times, to create a folio of responses analysing authors’ use of language and its impact on the message and ideas of text. For this pre-assessment task select one of the two poems that have been provided as a resource to complete the task. Alternatively you could select another poem. the Pre-assessment task you may wish to discuss some of the following:-
Form: 1. What kind of poem is it? (e.g. ode, anthem, lyric poem) 2. What is the purpose of this kind of poem? (e.g. entertain emotionally, persuade) 3. How long is the poem? 4. Does it have narrative elements or does it convey experiences, thoughts, feelings or ideas about a subject, without necessarily having ‘something happen’? 5. What images does it use? 6. Does it make comparisons or connections between one thing and another? Structure 1. How many lines does the poem have? 2. Does it have regular stanzas? 3. Does it use regular rhyming patterns or does it use free verse? 4. How long are the lines? 5. Does the poem use punctuation? Vocabulary 1. Make note of any unfamiliar or specialised words and their meaning/s. 2. Make a note of the noun groups used. 3. Does it use sound devices, such as alliteration, assonance, repetition, rhyme and rhythm? Contexts Find information about the social, historical and cultural contexts surrounding the poem and the poet.
