I. COURSE DESCRIPTION An advanced examination of selected books in the English Bible. The course may be repeated for credit where the book studied differs. A comparative and contrast study of the Synoptic Gospels and John from the perspective afforded exegetical studies of the Greek text. This course recognizes diversity in the Canonical Gospels, and suggests methodological resolutions to the issue of unity within diversity. Problem issues addressed include: the use of “Son of Man” by Jesus; the centrality of the “Kingdom of God” in the mission and teaching of Jesus; the history of Synoptic Problem; the development from the oral tradition to the subsequent written tradition of the material contained in the Canonical Gospels, how the theological intent of the Evangelist has shaped the study of the Canonical Gospels, & kerygma; the reason for the rise of faith in the early church; the historical reliability of the Synoptic Gospel traditions concerning the person and work of Jesus Messiah; the difficulties associated with attempting a harmonization of the Canonical Gospels; and the place and importance of Extra- Biblical literature; and the Q, special Matthew & Luke materials.

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: A. Discuss related issues and solutions pertaining to the Synoptic Problem; B. Distinguish the methodological approach of an the Gospel Evangelists’ theological work; i.e., whether the author's approach is diachronic systematic, lexicographic, descriptive, or thematic; C. Discuss with the relationships between Synoptic Studies and the rise of Biblical Criticism; D. Distinguish of the major approaches of Biblical Criticism; form, redaction, literary, structural, etc.; E. Assess the relationship of the Synoptic Problem in New Testament Studies; F. Describe areas of study pertinent to doing Synoptic studies; e.g., unity, the nature of history, history & kerygma, revelation and history, canon, etc.; G. Recognize the theological distinctives of the Gospel writers; H. Articulate a Synoptic theology of the Kingdom of God as it pertains to the mission and message of Jesus Messiah.

III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION PROCEDURES A. The student must prepare a paper at the end of the investigation of the Synoptic materials on the evangelists' Kingdom of God theology & the role this motif fulfills in the life & teachings of Jesus. B. As is obvious from the course outline, the lecture method is integrated with student participation & discussion. Particularly is this valuable in achieving in part course objectives one through twelve. C. Each student must be prepared to act as a resource person on a particular theme or question of importance raised in the course of discussion & investigation. D. Extensive reading in the required texts is mandatory. E. In addition to the stipulated requirements in the course syllabus, Master’s level students are required to prepare to supplement the text by engaging the class & professor in a rigorous presentation & discussion of the parallel materials in the assigned reading for each class period. This supplementation must be taken from Craig L. Blomberg, Jesus & the Gospels: Introduction & Survey, 2nd ed., (B & H Academic, 2009), which is an additional assigned text, & from other pertinent student preferred references (e.g. Bock, Jesus According to Scripture: Restoring the Portrait from the Gospels). “Limited working proficiency” in Greek is preferred, although any student with “elementary proficiency” should perform well. F. Attendance: Since class participation is vital to learning, absences should be taken only when G. absolutely necessary. Absences of class sessions for more than seven (7) classes for two-days-per week classes and three (3) for block classes will result in an “F” in the course. The professor and the Executive Vice President and Provost must approve all exceptions to this policy. Proportionate absences apply to all other terms (J-Term, summer classes, language term, etc.). Students are responsible for all absences due to illness or any other reason. Granting of excused absences is permitted at the discretion of the professor. Tardiness: Being at least fifteen minutes (15) minutes tardy to class, or departing fifteen (15) minutes prior the end of class is considered one absence. Three instances of tardiness of fifteen minutes or less equals one absence. The tardy student is responsible for notifying the professor of his/her presence in writing at the end of class. Students who wish to depart early should clear it with the professor prior to departure. F. Major exams = ½ of the total grade (both scheduled & unscheduled). Daily work (reading, quizzes, etc) = ½ of total grade.

IV. AUDITING AND SIT-IN STUDENTS Any student may enroll in a course as an Auditor or Sit-in if space is available in the classroom. A student’s permanent transcript will reflect which courses have been completed as audits. Sit-in students are not given grades by professors and their transcripts will not reflect enrollment in the course. Taking tests and participation in course activities afforded to credit students in the syllabus is at the discretion of the professor.

VI. PAPER REQUIREMENTS A. The research paper must be approximately 20 doubled spaced pages prepared on a topic chosen from one of the following areas of study in the corpus of literature under consideration. Other topics of contemporary interest may be chosen for research in consultation with the instructor. The paper will reflect the guidelines of the current Turabian Manual. VII. CLASSROOM MILIEU A. Honesty: Absolute truth is an essential belief and the basis of behavior for those who believe in a God who cannot lie and forbids falsehood. Academic honesty includes the basic premise that all work students submit must be their own and any ideas received from somewhere else must be carefully documented. B. Learning Disabilities: If you have learning or other disabilities, please inform the professor at the beginning of the course. Our intention is to help all students learn. We will try to accommodate your needs if at all possible. C. Student Dress Code (While on Campus): All students are to follow The Criswell College dress code as noted in the Student Handbook. Students not in compliance to the code may be asked to leave class. The dress code reflects our intent of preparing students for leadership in ministry. Here are the basics of the dress code. Jeans and casual wear are appropriate provided that the clothing is modest and in good condition. Both men and women should avoid extremes in hairstyles and jewelry. No body piercing is allowed except women’s earrings. All students are expected to maintain proper hygiene and grooming. Shorts and tank-tops are not allowed on campus. Other inappropriate wear would include torn clothing, skimpy dresses, bare midriffs and bare shoulders.

VIII. PERFORMANCE INDICATORS A. Knows how to use a harmony and synopsis, the difference between the two, where parallel accounts exist and how such accounts are both similar and dissimilar. B. Proposes a probable timeline of the life of Christ recognizing key problems pertaining to the chronology of (1) the birth of Jesus (the death of Herod, Luke’s dating, the visit of the wise men, complicating factors, etc.); (2) the beginning of Jesus’ ministry (involving the assembly and interpretation of key pieces of Gospel data: Luke 3:1, 23; John 8:57; John 2:20, as well as the affect which the length of his ministry and crucifixion have on the outset of his ministry); (3) Jesus’ age at the outset of his ministry (Luke 3:23; John 8:57); (4) the length of his ministry [one year: Origen, Clement of Alexandria,

Conzelmann; two years: Apollinaris, Caird, F.F. Bruce; three years: Eusebius, A.T. Robertson, Don Guthrie, Hoehner; four years: Stauffer]; (5) the date of the crucifision & resurrection; (6) other pertinent Details: John 1:19-4:42; 4:43-54 (cf. Establish a methodology for the study of the Gospel accounts, namely, an unapologetic openness to the supernatural employing grammatico-historical-theological method D. Knows the primary sources available for studying the life of Jesus: (1) pagan (Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, Mara bar Serapion, Julius Africanus); (2) Jewish (Josephus: The Anliquities of the Jewish War, The History of the Jewish War, the Rabbinic writings; Talmud consisting of the Mishna and The Gemara); (3) Christian (extrabiblical: apocryphal gospels, e.q. the Gospel of Thomas; hypothetical Documents: “d”, Secret Gospel of Mark, the Gospel of Peter; quotations from church fathers; textual variants found in various Gospel Mss. Biblical: Acts through Revelation and the Gospels. E. Knows and assesses approaches and methods related to the study of the historical Jesus: (1) the Old Quest (1778-1900): rationalist and mythologizers; romantics; liberals; (2) the “No Quest” (1900-1940); The New Quest (1940-1980); the Third Quest (1980-present): (1) emphasis on deeds of Jesus: a. eschatological prophet, e.q. E.P. Snaders; b. charismatic holy man: Geza Vermes; “Spirit-person”, Marcus Borg; Martin hangel); c. social reformer: Gerd Theissen and Richard Horsley; d. marginalized Messiah: N.T.
