Course objectives: This is a semi-intensive intermediate course designed for students who have completed an introductory sequence (POR 1130-1131, POR 3010, or the equivalent). The primary aims are to develop and to enhance students' written and spoken command of the language, with attention to select review and advancement of grammar as well as to expansion of vocabulary. Concurrent goals are to achieve further cultural understanding through readings plus discussion and to explore relevant resources in Internet domains principally .br (Brasil) and .pt (Portugal). All are encouraged to pursue study-abroad options, especially the University of Florida Summer B program in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture at IBEU in Rio de Janeiro. Grading: 3 exams (43%); 7 compositions (42%); class assignments and performance, including both attendance and participation (15%). NB: excellent score necessary in all categories in order to merit an A grade, or good in both for a B grade, or adequate in both for a C. Scale: A=93-99.9, A-=90-92.9; B+=87-89.9; B=80-86.9; C+=77-79.9; C=70-76.9; D+=67-69.9, D=60 >. Specific instructions on assignments follow in each class and by e-mail. Everyone should check UF e-mail twice a day for course updates. This class welcomes students who are at low- to high-intermediate level, therefore grades necessarily factor in their incoming status. NB: this course is not designed for heritage speakers nor for those beyond high intermediate; admission in these cases is by special arrangement only. As always, if in doubt, please do consult.
