AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

DAY STUDENTS Middle and High School students staying after school can (with permission) participate in an organized and structured program such as sports, class and organization meetings or student work group (SWG). When a day student stays after school for a class and organization meeting, the following needs to occur:

 “A Day Student Staying after School Permission Form”, found on the website must be filled out one day in advance and submit to Alyssa Pecorino, Coordinator of Student Support Services or Barbara French, Coordinator of Student Support Services.  Transportation must be arranged by parents for transportation home.  Parents must agree to have their child under the supervision of ASD staff.

All day students staying after school must follow the school rules. Students are expected to follow requests and directions from the Residential Counselors. Failure to do so may result in loss of privilege to remain after school.

TRANSPORTATION Some towns offer late buses at 5:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Students from those towns may take the late bus home. For Middle and High School students participating in sports or SWG, pick-up time is 5:15 p.m. and for those participating in class organizations, 7:00 p.m. Any late pick-up for special events needs to be arranged through Administrative Assistant, Patricia Meade at 860-570-1845 or email Kristin Feldman at [email protected] or text (860) 944-9365.

All pick-ups are in the front of the Ward Gym building unless otherwise specified.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES Parents must assist the school in supporting a wide range of extra-circular activities. Parent support occurs in a variety of ways, some of which are listed below:

 Completing and submitting the physical exam report prior to start of sports practice  Attending and supporting activities, when possible  Explaining team or organization rules to your child  Providing transportation or meeting your child at the designated time and being patient if the group is late  Informing school of all special medical issues or concern 4

CLASS/ORGANIZATION DUES

Private arrangements can be provided with work opportunities to earn funds to pay for these expenses. Dues are non-refundable if a student leaves ASD.

CLASSES/ORGANIZATIONS DUES

Class of 2017 & 2018 Letters to parents regarding senior expenses will be sent out in early spring. Girl Scouts $30.00 per year – Letters to parents regarding your daughter joining the troop will be sent out in the fall.

ACADEMIC BOWL (National) Date/Location April 1-7, 2017 Location: Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose A region competition with a goal to compete at National level. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

ACADEMIC BOWL (Northeast Regional) Date/Location March 10-13, 2017 Location: Rockville High School @ Rockville, Maryland Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose A region competition with a goal to compete at Northeast Regional level. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

AFTER SCHOOL LANGUAGE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Date/Location 2 (6 weeks sessions) Fall/Spring Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Education Center Membership Elementary Students - up to 8th grade. Purpose To enhance literacy skills. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

ALL STARS – UNIFIED OLYMPIC Date/Location March/April after varsity basketball season, practice Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00 pm Location: Ward Gym Membership Open to special need students ages 14 – 21. Purpose To learn basic basketball, sportsmanship, teamwork and to compete in few Unified Basketball games Fundraisers & Activities None

CHESS CLUB Date/Location To be discussed, Location: Library Membership Middle school students/High School students Purpose To learn how to play a game of chess, Fundraisers & Activities None

CONNECTICUT YOUTH FORUM/ STUDENT EXCHANGE EVENT Date/Location Tuesday, 3:30 P.M. – 5:30 P.M. Location: Various School Locations Membership Open to interested students in 9th – 12th grade – different schools host student board meetings. Purpose Students develop leadership skills and share viewpoints and experiences about different issues to break down barriers that form stereotyping. Fundraisers & Activities Participation in the Student Exchange Program.

DANCE CLUB

Date/Location Every Other Wednesday, 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Location: Student Lounge Perform during home basketball games; talent show. Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose To encourage self-expression and creativity through movement. Dance is a natural vehicle that children use to help them understand themselves and the world in which they live. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

DISC GOLF CLUB Date/Location May – June after Track Season Location: Soccer Field Membership Open to students ages 13 – 21. Purpose To learn basic disc golf, sportsmanship, teamwork and to compete in New England Tournament. Fundraisers & Activities None

DRAMA CLUB Date/Location Every other Wednesday, 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Location: Student Lounge Membership Open to all students interested in drama, expressing and communicating feelings, emotions, ideas and information and be a part of Spring performance. Purpose Entertain, teach a lesson (a principle or moral), re-enact history, etc. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined

FLY FISHING Date/Location March – May Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Education Center Membership Any student can participate. Purpose To learn how to fly tying and to attend a fishing trip. Fundraisers & Activities CT Fly Fishing Association

FRENCH EXCHANGE Date/Location Spring Location: ASD/ Paris, France Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose To learn the language, and the culture. Fundraisers & Activities School bookstore GIRL SCOUTS Date/Location Every Other Wednesday, 3:30 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.

HUGH O’BRIAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP (HOBY) Date/Location May or June, To be determined Location: University of Bridgeport Membership Open to one or two selected students. Purpose Its mission is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower youth to achieve their highest potential. Fundraisers & Activities None

JUNIOR CAD Date/Location Monthly Meeting on Monday, 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Education Center Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Deaf youths from other schools are welcome. Purpose To develop leadership skills and provide community service to deaf citizens and organizations. Fundraisers & Activities  Holiday party for local deaf groups at ASD: February or March  Community Service

LATINO GROUP Date/Location Monthly Meeting on Friday at Lunchtime Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Education Center Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose Explore the Hispanic culture. MARTIN LUTHER KING SOCIETY Date/Location Monthly Meeting on first Tuesday of each month, 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Education Center Membership Open to all students interested in promotion of Black History. Purpose To increase awareness of Black History and Culture. Fundraisers & Activities To sponsor activities during Black History Month.

MATHCOUNTS COMPETITON Date/Location April 7-9, 2017 Location: NTID in Rochester, New York Membership Open to all 7th – 8th graders at ASD. Purpose To allow students real life opportunities to utilize the math computation al and problem solving skills they are taught in the classroom. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

OVER-AGE BASKETBALL Date/Location January – March Location: Ward Gym; Brewster Gym Membership Open to overage students. Purpose To learn basketball skills, teamwork, sportsmanship to compete in games with Schools for the Deaf. Fundraisers & Activities None

PEACE JAM Date/Location March or April Location: University of Connecticut Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose “Based on the lives and works of leading Nobel Peace Prize winners who share their spirit, skills and wisdom with youth around the world, the program helps young people become committed to positive change in themselves and become a force for change in their communities and the world. “ The program consists of 3 basic components: a curriculum on peace/non-violence, learning about the life and work of a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and a service learning project which students must create and implement. ASD is the only program for deaf students that participates in the Northeast Region Peace Jam. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined. ROBOTICS Date/Location Spring Location: To be determined

Membership Selected students (up to 8). Purpose To learn how machines are made on a team, increase math skills and other learning opportunities that will help the student academically. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHY/ YEARBOOK CLUB Date/Location Monthly Meetings Location: Vocational Building Membership Open to all 9th – 12th graders at ASD. Purpose Enhance photography skills and assist with yearbook. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

SCIENCE FAIR Date/Location May – To be determined Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Educational Center Membership Pre K – 5th grade. Grades 6-8, To be determined Purpose To learn about science and allow students to actively take part in a creative process from beginning to the end including displaying the information. Location: Gallaudet-Clerc Education Center Membership Selected student representatives from classes, organizations and dormitories. Purpose To share general concerns/issues about the school. Fundraisers & Activities None

SWIM CLUB Date/Location October to January Location: ASD Pool Membership Open to students ages 14 – 21. Purpose To learn basic swimming and compete with Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford. Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

WE THE PEOPLE Date/Location April Location: American School for the Deaf Membership Open to 9th – 12th graders at ASD taking social studies courses. Purpose Hearing students and deaf students to participate the competition Fundraisers & Activities To be determined.

ATHLETICS

GUIDELINES

 Practice daily (unless noted).  Attendance is important.  Student must maintain a 2.00 GPA and must be the age of 14 or High School to remain an active participant on the team. If a student is on academic probation, he/she can participate in practice sessions but will be refrained from participating in games.  Students should bring their own towels.  Mouth guards for sports are strongly suggested.  Students should demonstrate a positive attitude at all times.  ASD has no cut policy except noted.  Students are expected to follow team rules and may be dismissed from a team for failure to follow school and/or team rules.  All students must have a Physical Exam and Physicians Approval prior to participation. Parents are asked to arrange for the physical prior to the opening of school.
