TITLE: Mass Lost While Chewing 8 Different Types of Bubble Gum

TITLE: Mass Lost While Chewing 8 Different Types Of Bubble Gum PURPOSE: To record the amount of mass that is dissolved when gum is chewed and to determine which brand of gum loses the most mass. BACKGROUND: Bubble gum is made up of sugar, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, and gum base. Gum base has three important ingredients in it, it has rubber to make the gum elastic and stretchy, it has wax, which keeps the gum hard in the wrapper, and it has plastic that mixes with the rubber to make it easier to chew. Also, depending on the amount of sugar, flavoring, and coloring making up the gum, it may lose more mass then other types of gum. For example, dubble bubble has 4g of sugar, which is more than any other gum, so dubble bubble could possibly lose the most mass out of all the gums. After a piece of gum loses all of its flavoring, sugar, and coloring, you are supposed to spit out because all that is left will be the gum base that contains rubber, plastic, and wax, and your body can’t digest it. MATERIALS:

 8 different bubble gum brands (Hubba Bubba Max, Trident, Bubble Yum, Extra, Bubbalicious, Orbit, Bazooka, and Dubble Bubble)  Triple Beam Balance

 Mouth

HYPOTHESIS : Dubble Bubble will loss the most mass because it has 88.8% sugar content and 5 out of 9 ingredients are sugars. In addition, wax, flavoring, and coloring will be lost. Wax is 1/3 of gum base that dissolves the other two ingredients are plastic and rubber. PROCEDURE:

1. On triple-beam balance measure mass of paper

2. On triple-beam balance measure mass of gum without rapper

3. Subtract mass of gum minis mass of paper

4. Chew gum for 10 minuets

5. Measure mass of chewed gum

6. Subtract mass of chewed gum minis mass of paper

7. Find difference of pre-chewed gum chewed gum

8. Find percent of mass lost

9. Repeat steps 1-8 with all 8 brands of gum The Amount of Mass Lost in Hubba Bubba Max Gum

ANALYSIS QUESTIONS: 1.The gum that lost the most mass was Dubble Bubble with 60.2 g. The gum that lost the least mass was Extra with 39 g. lost 2.Sugar, because most of the gums sugar percentage is over 50% 3.The mass that is lost from the gum goes through your digestive system and into your stomach 4.Sugar makes the gum sweet and supports the flavoring 5.Hubba Bubba Max had a high outlier at 80% and a lower outlier at 35% CONCLUSION:

We think that Double Bubble will lose the most mass because 88.8% of the gum is sugar. We were correct Double Bubble lost 60.2% and that was the most percent lost in any of the other gums. This gum lab experiment was not controlled not everyone chewed at the same pace or moved the gum around the same. To make this a controlled experiment it would need to be the same pace and gum movement. Double Bubble lost the most mass out of all the gums.
