Memoir Revision Checklist for the Writer As the editor… 1. Read a classmate’s memoir once through without making any marks 2. Then, read over multiple times while fully completing this checklist for your classmate’s memoir 3. Make any/all revision or editing suggestions as you read through – do not limit yourself to this checklist. * After receiving the completed checklist & your rough draft back from the editor, bring it to class when you turn in your Final Draft.
Does the memoir describe a clear setting? Highlight areas of improvement needed in YELLOW. Include a note next to these areas on what exactly he/she needs to improve.
Does the memoir clearly reflect an overall mood? Yes / No What is/are the mood(s)?
Is the message/theme/lesson clearly stated in the memoir? Yes / No What do you think is the message/theme/lesson?
Is there a clear, effective structure – paragraphs & progression of events? Yes / No Is the dialogue all punctuated and structured correctly? Yes / No / Not always Highlight or circle areas to improve in ORANGE.
Does the memoir eliminate unnecessary or weak words and use precise and powerful verbs? Highlight words to revise in RED.
Does the memoir appeal to a variety of senses? (sight, smell, touch, taste, hear) Highlight all the fantastic imagery in GREEN. Which senses are not included the memoir?
Is the imagery detailed and evocative? Can the reader picture ideas clearly? Yes / No / Average Write notes on the actual memoir for all places where the writer is just telling, not showing.
Does the memoir use literary features effectively (simile, metaphor, personification, etc.)? Yes / No
