[3969-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO EXPRESS THE BELIEF OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY 12 THAT NASCAR RACING IS AN INTEGRAL AND VITAL 13 PART OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS 14 ECONOMY, TO RECOGNIZE THE DARLINGTON 15 RACEWAY AS ONE OF OUR STATE’S MOST TREASURED 16 ATTRACTIONS, AS WELL AS IDENTIFY NASCAR’S RICH 17 HISTORY IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO 18 NAME THE WEEK OF MAY 5, 2013, THROUGH MAY 12, 19 2013, AS “DARLINGTON RACEWAY WEEK A WEEK TOO 20 TOUGH TO TAME” IN SOUTH CAROLINA. 21 22 Whereas, the Darlington Raceway opened on September 4, 1950, 23 with the inaugural running of the Southern 500, the first stock car 24 race on a paved track; and 25 26 Whereas, since 1950, Darlington Raceway has served as a 27 cornerstone in the development of stock car racing, one of the 28 fastest growing and most popular spectator sports in the country; 29 and 30 31 Whereas, Darlington Raceway is celebrating its sixtyfourth season 32 of racing; and 33 34 Whereas, Darlington Raceway still hosts its annual spring race 35 events, which will be held this year during the week of May 5, 36 2013; and 37 38 Whereas, South Carolina lays claim to many of the legends of 39 NASCAR racing, including Rex White, David Pearson, Bud 40 Moore, James Hylton, Tiny Lund, and Cale Yarborough; and 41

[3969] 3 1 Whereas, the State of South Carolina is rich in historical references 2 to the sport of stock car racing, as evidenced by the Darlington 3 Raceway Stock Car Museum, and the National Motorsports Press 4 Association Hall of Fame at Darlington Raceway, in addition to 5 dirt raceways across the State of South Carolina that served as 6 home to the fledgling sport of NASCAR racing in the 1950s; and 7 8 Whereas, the NASCAR events at Darlington focus our nation’s 9 attention and the attention of the world upon our great State as a 10 sport and tourism destination each year; and 11 12 Whereas, the annual economic impact that NASCAR racing has on 13 South Carolina is in excess of fifty million dollars, as NASCAR 14 fans from across the country and around the world visit the State 15 each year to attend racing events and then vacation in communities 16 throughout the Palmetto State; and 17 18 Whereas, the Darlington Raceway participates as a good corporate 19 citizen at the local, regional, and state levels and is active in 20 numerous community and charitable efforts in contributing to the 21 improvement of the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, 22 therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 25 concurring: 26 27 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 28 Carolina, by this resolution, express the belief that NASCAR 29 racing is an integral and vital part of the State of South Carolina 30 and its economy and recognize Darlington Raceway as one of our 31 state’s most treasured attractions and NASCAR racing as a 32 significant part of South Carolina’s rich history. 33 34 Be it further resolved that the week of May 5, 2013, through May 35 12, 2013, be officially recognized as “Darlington Raceway Week 36 A Week Too Tough to Tame” in South Carolina. 37 38 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 39 NASCAR and the Darlington Raceway. 40 XX 41
