Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to Cody-Medicine and Community Health High School Cross Categorical Classroom 2016/2017 school year. Ms. Conway and Ms. Howze will be your child’s teachers this year. Ms. Conway teaches Math and Science. Ms. Howze teaches English and Social Studies. Students will also be mainstreamed into the General Education classrooms for Yearbook and Debate.

We need to be partners in the learning process of all students. Please encourage your child to complete assignments, homework, and help them study for quizzes and tests, if necessary. I know with your help, we will have a great year.

Meeting notifications for your child’s IEPs will be sent to you in advance. Please feel free to call at the number listed above for any questions, concerns, or to schedule a conference. PLEASE NOTE: CELL PHONES ARE PROHIBITED IN THE CLASSROOM AND HALLWAYS. I am not responsible for the loss, damage of your cell phone.

SCHOOL HOURS

Monday: 8:00am – 1:40pm

*Students will remain in the classroom participating in leisure activities until the bus arrives at 3:05pm

Tuesday – Friday 8:00am – 3:20pm

TRANSPORTATION

Every morning, students will be greeted by the classroom aide and teacher at the Greenview door as soon as they arrive to school. After arriving, students will go directly to the cafeteria for breakfast. At the end of the day, students will be escorted to the Greenview door and wait for their buses to arrive. SCHOOL UNIFORM

Students are required to wear uniforms every day. Pants or skirts colors are khaki only. The color of the student’s uniform shirt is burgundy. Eleventh grade students may wear burgundy scrubs. Twelfth grade students may wear scrubs of any color. Students may purchase polo shirts and burgundy scrub tops ($8 each or 2 for $15) and sweatshirts for $12 from the bookstore. Students are also assigned their own lockers. Combination locks can be purchased in the bookstore for $2.00. Students can also purchase locks outside of the school. It is imperative that students have a lock on their lockers.

TEXT AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES

Textbook: Pacemaker Mathematics and General Science

Supplies: (2) Spiral notebooks, (1) Composition Book, (2) Folders, (2) Pencils, (2) Ink Pens (black or blue ONLY), Line Paper.

Universal Grading Sale Course work will be weighted as follows

A 100-90 B 89-80 C 79-70 D 69-60 E 59- Class Work 50% Participation 20% Projects 10% Test 10% Final Exam 10%

ATTENDANCE POLICY Ninth and Tenth Grade Mathematics and General Science Course Syllabus Students will be required to establish a valid reason for absences and tardiness from school or class. Methods for establishing valid reasons for absences and tardiness from class or school include:

 A note or phone call from a parent/guardian  A pass from a staff member  A statement from a doctor/hospital/clinic  A copy of a document for court appearances

Students who submit an absence note within three days after returning from an absence are entitled to make-up work. The student must request the make-up work within three days after returning to school.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Students should expect homework at least twice a week. The homework will be designed to provide a means of reinforcing the curriculum after the student has received guidance and instruction. It is very important that students complete homework in the time allotted and return it when due.

MAKE-UP WORK POLICY

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missing tests or assignments only if you were absent. Make- up work will not be accepted if you were in school the day the assignment was given.

NOTE: This course of study emphasizes individualized functional academics and vocational training in a categorical classroom. Following this track, students will not meet the requirements for the traditional High School Diploma, and therefore may be limited to their post-secondary options. This student may have the option to receive special education programs and services until the age of 26 and will receive a Certificate of Completion. The Parent Portal is an online resource for parents that provide direct access to student data via the Internet connection. Using a confidential password and PIN, parents can connect to the DPS database using a web browser and view their child’s data, such as progress reports, attendance records, report cards, transcripts and more. Course Description of Math: This course is designed to provide the students with a clear understanding of Math concepts. Students will be able to master these concepts with reasonable efficiency. Using the essential common core components , daily objectives will be set and assessed daily. Based on these the Essential Michigan Common Core Standards, the areas of study are Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry. The standards are fully explained on the Common Core Michigan Standards website www.corestandards.org

Course Objectives - Essential Components of Common Core: Based on common core essential elements, the following curriculum goals will be the student's primary focus: Understanding Whole Numbers, Adding Whole Numbers, Subtracting Whole Numbers, Multiplying Whole Numbers, Dividing Whole Numbers, Algebra.

On-Line Component: Teacher discretion...Is required

Course Description of General Science: This course is designed to help students understand the nature of science and demonstrate an ability to practice scientific reasoning by applying it to the design, execution, and evaluation of scientific investigations. Using the essential common core components , daily objectives will be set and assessed daily. Based on these Michigan’s High School Science Essential Content Standards and Expectations areas of study are Wonders of Science, Life Science Part I, and Life Science Part II

Class and Group Projects: Teacher’s discretion …..Is required

Course Objectives - Essential Components of Common Core: Based on common core essential elements, the following curriculum goals will be the student's primary focus: The Process of Discovery, The Study of Cells & Life, The Kingdoms of Life, Genetics, Evolution, and The Human Body.

Vocational -TouchMath Objectives: TouchMath provides innovative learning concepts to help the student actively participate, gain confidence, and increase achievement by reinforcing concepts learned in class. Students will be able to succeed and achieve academic success by seeing, saying, hearing, and touching to learn the concepts and demonstrate fluency with computation. Please sign and return this form to the teacher. Extra credit will be given to student once form is returned to the teacher. Forms that are not returned will result in non-credit.
