Course Objective By taking this course, you will be equipped to:  Survive the first day, week, month, semester, and year at TECH.  Find and relate to professors, staff, and other students.  Find out how to locate information on campus, and how to get help as needed.  Make great use of your time.  Be comfortable knowing that there is no bad question, and feeling free to ask it.  Figure out which student organizations are on campus and which ones are the best fit for you.  Determine your purpose for attending college.

ATU Course Catalog Description: A course designed to provide information and enhance skills that will enable students to take responsibility for a successful transition to college. The course will expose students to college resources and requirements and promote the development of practical skills for college success.

Course Format The format of the class will rely heavily on class discussion and participation. The course will include personal reflection, exploration, reading assignments and experiential learning through group work, projects, and assignments.

Academic Credit 1 credit hour

Attendance and Classroom Behavior Class attendance is mandatory. If it is necessary that you miss a class, courtesy requires an explanation to the instructor, BEFORE the absence occurs. You may call or e-mail me, or leave a message in the office. Students are allowed a maximum of 3 absences. Additional absences will result in lowering of your final grade by ½ letter grade for EACH absence. Three late arrivals equal one absence. Note: Late submission of work is allowed in rare cases under extreme extenuating circumstances and is solely at the instructor’s discretion. If extenuating circumstances arise, notify the instructor as soon as possible. You must be present for all exams.

Page 2 Week 7 Test-Taking Assignment for next class (Week 8):  Login to your TECH 1001 Blackboard account and print off a copy of “Tech History” from Week 8. o Find and write down 5 interesting events from “Tech History” and bring them to class  Explore the Arkansas Tech Centennial Website: http://www.atu.edu/centennial/history.shtml o On the website, find 5 interesting items from the History timeline about Tech and bring them to share with your classmates

Week 8 TECH History Assignment for next class (Week 9):  Campus Involvement Form Due  Using the ATU Catalog and a Schedule of Classes (available in print at the Academic Advising Center) develop a potential schedule for the next term. Go to OneTech to identify your advisor (in OneTech click on the Student tab and scroll down the page to advisor on left side of page). Go to http://www.atu.edu/registrar/forms_for_students.shtml and print off the Permit to Register form. Your schedule should take into account your declared or likely major, class time preferences, work obligations, etc. Keep in mind this is only a potential schedule that may be adjusted by your advisor based on degree requirements and availability of classes when you register. Bring the completed form to class.

Week 10 Utilizing the Library Assignment for next class (Week 11):  Read Chapter 7  Have students visit Plagiarism.org and review the “What is Plagiarism?” link.

Week 11 Writing and Plagiarism Assignment for next class (Week 12):  Read Ch. 10  Identify your major or one you are considering. Then reflect on ten things you should ask or know about this major and the career options it provides. The assignment is not to research the information but rather to list the things you want to know about a major or career.

Week 12 Career Planning Assignment for next class (Week 13):  Read chapters 8 and 9.  Complete the “Take a fearless look at your health” activity on page 106.  Complete the “Write an I message” activity on page 99.  Academic Advisor/B2E Mentor meeting form due

Week 13 Relationships and Health Assignment for next class (Week 14):  Complete the 5-3-1 reflection paper and bring it to class

Page 3 Campus Involvement Forms Each student enrolled in TECH 1001 is required to attend two ATU approved campus events during the fall semester. You can attend any ATU sponsored campus event. The date each Campus Involvement Form is due is in the Course Outline.

B2E/Academic Advisor Meeting Form Each student enrolled in TECH 1001 is required to meet with his/her Bridge to Excellence Mentor or Academic Advisor during the course of the semester. The date due for this meeting is in the Course Outline.

Quizzes Quizzes will cover textbook topics, class lectures, and guest speaker presentations. You are responsible for understanding all of the material in the event that it is covered on a quiz.

Academic Honesty Statement Students are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic honesty as outlined in the ATU Student Handbook. Any information that is copied from another source must be noted as such in student materials. Page number or Internet reference must appear in the text and full bibliographic references must appear in the reference section of the paper/assignment. Other forms of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to buying papers, copying paragraphs/pages of text/whole papers off the Internet, copying another student’s answers, etc. Instances of academic dishonesty will result in the student’s work being submitted to other TECH 1001 faculty for their interpretation of the work. If the faculty members find the work is guilty of plagiarism, the faculty can make the following recommendations: award a grade of a “0” on the assignment, make the student re-submit the work, award an “F” in the course, and/or report the student to the Dean of Students for further action, which could result in grounds for probation, suspension, and/or expulsion.

University Testing and Disability Services If a student has a disability that qualifies under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and requires accommodations, he/she should contact the Office of University Testing and Disability Services for information on appropriate policies and procedures. Disabilities covered by ADA may include learning, psychiatric, physical disabilities, or chronic health disorders. Students can contact the Office of University Testing and Disability Services if they are not certain whether a medical condition/disability qualifies.
