Welcome to the Facing the Past's on-line educator support website.

This website has been designed to support the teachers participating in the Facing the Past project. On this site you will find a suggested course outline for teaching Nazi Germany and the Holocaust and apartheid South Africa in Grade 9. This page will give you access to suggested lesson plans and resources that you can use in the classroom. This website will also keep you informed about what is happening in the Facing the Past project.

The partners in Facing the Past The Cape Town Holocaust Centre, established in 1999, is an education institution dedicated to teaching the historical, moral and ethical dimensions of the Holocaust. The Centre houses a permanent exhibition and conducts education programmes and seminars for high school learners (Grades 9-12), students from tertiary institutions, professional educators and for a wide variety of groups from the civil service and the broader society. Facing History and Ourselves (Boston, USA) is an international education and teacher training organisation whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. The organisation has developed numerous resources for educators to use in the classrooms, many of which are available at www.facinghistory.org. South African educators are able to be in touch with educators around the world through the website.

Facing the Past is located within the Curriculum section of the Western Cape Education Department and forms part of the on-line learning strategy for the Province..
