YUROK TRIBE JOB DESCRIPTION FORESTRY TECHNICIAN III

Job Title: Technician III - Forestry Job Code 5 Department Forestry Program Area Lower Klamath Location Klamath/ Tulley Creek Reports To: Lead Forestry Technician or Forester FLSA Status Non-Exempt ALL HIRING IS SUBJECT TO THE YUROK TRIBE’S HIRING PREFERENCE Salary Range $15.45 - $20.09

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of Lead Forestry Technician and/or Forester, this position assists in the collection of basic forest resource data such as tree attributes, stand level data, and road conditions on tribally owned lands. This position will oversee Forestry Technician I’, II’s and assist in the performance of a variety of forestry projects including but not limited to: fuel break brushing, piling, burning of slash, tree planting, timber marking and road maintenance.

There will be a fair amount of travel time to and from some plot locations. Travel costs and vehicles are provided to conduct plot visits. Personnel should expect to work in adverse weather conditions. Work is often performed in rugged, steep and/or brushy areas. Significant amounts of on-trail and off-trail hiking are required while carrying the required field equipment to complete the work. Excellent physical conditioning is a must. Exposure to hazards such as poison oak and insects is extremely common.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may include, but is not limited to, the following duties: 1. Participates in the brushing of roads, trails, and timber stands, removal of vegetative material, piling slash and vegetative material; often in challenging conditions. 2. Participates in forest site preparation and tree planting activities. 3. Maintains and operates forestry related support equipment including but not limited to: Axes/hatchets, chainsaws, Rhinos/ATVs, and 4WD vehicles. 4. Participates in forestry project layouts including but not limited to: unit/road/trail/watercourse flagging and timber marking. 5. May be called to participate in wildland fire suppression operations. 6. Participates in the preparation and application of prescribed burning. 7. Collects data on forest resources and infrastructure using forestry related equipment including but not limited to: diameter tapes, clinometers, and range finders, data loggers, GPS units. 8. Navigates to, from, and around the forest using maps, compass, and GPS unit. 9. Data entry in the field and office environment using data loggers, GPS units, and the Microsoft Office suite in conjunction with a desktop/laptop computer, and maintains complete and accurate record keeping at all times, including daily field journals. 10. Assists in keeping the workplace, project work site, office areas, storage areas, and vehicles neat, orderly, and safe. 11. Cooperates with other agencies, Tribes, and interacts with co-workers and the general public in a professional manner as well as adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and maintains a safe working environment at all times.

12. Responsible for maintenance of all assigned tribal equipment and must account for any damages. 13. May be assigned other duties as required to meet the needs of the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. GRADE 5: Two (2) years of experience in the field of Forestry performing the duties of a Forestry Tech II. An AA Degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Forestry or a related field may be substituted for one year of work experience. 2. Ability to understand and follow directions. 3. Applicant should possess knowledge of and proficiency with using a geographic information system and remote sensing techniques. 4. Applicant should possess competence and/or experience with computers, word processing applications, databases, and spreadsheet programs. 5. Ability to record and enter data using field or office mediums legibly, accurately, and efficiently. 6. Valid state issued driver’s license and/or the ability to obtain a California or Oregon driver’s license. Must be insurable on the Tribe’s insurance policy. 7. All applicants are subject to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Free Work Place Policy including pre-employment screening. 8. Chainsaw Operation Certification (FALA) or the ability to attain certification within the first six months of employment. 9. Current First Aid and CPR Certification or the ability to attain certification within the first six months of employment. 10. Basic 32 Fire Training and required refresher training or the ability to attain certification within the first six months of employment. 11. Qualified Indian preference applies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position may be required to supervise Forestry Technician I’s, Forestry Technician II’s, interns and volunteers.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Knowledge of Yurok language is preferred but not required.

REASONING ABILITY:

Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and/or diagram form with ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations and/or the ability to think “on the fly” using situational awareness.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, have stamina and sufficient physical ability and dexterity to accomplish fieldwork that includes strenuous exertion, inclement weather and long hours in the field.

VISION REQUIREMENTS:

 Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).  Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).  Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships).  Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
