TIME CAPSULES If you were asked to choose an object to show future generations about life in today’s world, what would you choose? Would it be something cultural, such as a sample of today’s music or fashion? Or perhaps you’d decide on something technological to show how the people of today go about their daily business. Do you think that in 100 years, people will even be interested in how we live today? 5 The answer is most likely yes. People have always been fascinated with the idea of everyday life in the past. Archeologists spend their careers looking for proof of how past civilisations lived. Because of this fascination with the past, time capsules have become increasingly popular. A time capsule is a container in which a variety of items representing ordinary daily life are stored. The container is then sealed and buried, or put in a building with instructions to open it at a certain time in the future. 10 One interesting example of a time capsule is the Crypt of Civilization in Atlanta, USA. The crypt, or large underground room, was sealed in 1940 after being filled to capacity with thousands of objects, including papers and pictures. The unbelievable target date to open the crypt is 8113! Another example of an unusual project is the Yahoo! Time Capsule. This digital time capsule was created in 2006 and will be opened in 2020 in honour of the 25th anniversary of the Yahoo! website. For 30 days in 2006, 15 people all over the world were given the opportunity to contribute anything they chose to a special website. Their contribution had to, in some way, reflect everyday life. Thousands of people from 227 countries sent in material to be read, viewed or heard in the future. The material included stories and letters they’d written, personal photos, prayers, art, home movies and music. Not surprisingly, the most popular topic was love. Anyone can create their own personal time capsule. So get a special container, fill it with your own personal 20 items of choice and decide when in the future you want it opened. Someone far into the future will see today’s world through your eyes!
