Behavior Issues:

Tanner Behavioral Health Provides programs designed to be sensitive and responsive to the individual needs of each patient. Offered are free initial assessments, referral assistance, and crisis intervention admission services. By offering a comprehensive range of services, we provide our patients with the most appropriate level of treatment options depending on their specific needs. Pathways Center Child & Adolescent Programs Child and Adolescent Groups are where youth receive assistance with their emotional and behavioral problems. The programs ambitions are to help increase the consumers overall level of functioning by teaching skills to manage anger/impulsivity, involving parents in the treatment process, and ultimately integrating youth into the mainstream activitites/arenas. Groups include Life Skills, Anger Management, and Adolescent Substance Abuse Groups. Groups meet 2 hours per day after school for 12 weeks. Parenting Classes are available (group style or family counseling sessions) to teach parents how to use natural and logical consequences, give children room for making choices within set limits, how to learn from parenting mistakes, how to teach their child to be responsible for their actions, removing the parent from the “bad guy” role. These groups are held weekly for 2-hr sessions for a total of 8 weeks. Medicaid and Peachcare are accepted. Scholarships are available. Contact information: 770-836-6678 or 770- 830-2187.

S&T Assessment and Counseling Service, Inc. Provides Intensive Family Intervention (IFI) through Medicaid. IFI services may include crisis intervention, individual and/or family therapy, skills training and other rehabilitative supports to prevent the need for an out of home or more restrictive service. Services are provided to individuals through age 21 who have an emotional disturbance such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADHD, ADD, etc. A family member, school system, physician or any state agency can make referrals IF the individual has a valid Medicaid number. Love and Logic Program Becoming a Love and Logic Parent Program - This program is based on the Love and Logic philosophy...empathy plus consequences equals training. This unique approach unlocks the secrets of successful parenting. Teacher and paraprofessional training are offered during the year for Coweta County School System employees. Several elementary schools offer parenting classes, also. Please contact your school counselor to find locations. Monday’s Child This is a 4-week class for parents of challenging children who have had chronic discipline problems in being successful at school. Parents are given specific interventions to use to help their child at home. These classes are led by Sherry Warren, former teacher, principal, Gifted Program Coordinator, Science Consultant and Title 1 Coordinator. Local School Psychologist The department of psychological services employs school psychologists whose specialty is psychology and education. The goals of the school psychologist are to promote quality education for all children, to be an advocate for children and to promote mental health in the school setting. School psychologists work with students, parents, teachers, administrators and the community. School psychologists provide a wide range of services including consultation, assessment, intervention, research/planning, education and prevention. They tailor their services to the particular needs of each child and each situation, with the goal being to use a team-based decision-making process to support student learning within regular education through the implementation of a systematic, data-driven, problem-solving approach. Respite Care:

HOPE HOUSE (Children’s Respite Center) located in Union City provides respite care for medically fragile children at no cost to families. (770-969-8354) or www.swchristiancare.org

WeCare Home Volunteer Program is a volunteer program looking for volunteers in Coweta County to provide free respite care for families of children with any special need. Volunteers serve a family twice each month for four-hour periods. Volunteers will be trained locally (including CPR instruction). Potential volunteers or families in need of respite are encouraged to contact program director, Lorie Sumner (770-969-8354, x 249). This program is affiliated with Hope House.

CSS Healthcare Services provides in-home care for a child or adult with special needs. They require a minimum of 4 hours/ day (for days which a family requests care) and require 24-48 hours notice. They charge $14.50/hour and accept Medicaid. They provide nursing and home health services, can administer medication and provide skilled care for your child’s personal needs. They are a provider for the following state waiver programs: CCSP (Community Care Service Program), SOURCE (Service Options Using Resources in Community Environments) and MWP (Mental Retardation Waiver Program). FOCUS (Families of Children Under Stress) offers emotional, informational and physical support to parents of children with disabilities or ongoing medical needs. Services include respite for families; currently, sites are in the north metro Atlanta area. Happy Kids Co-op This Coweta County cooperative child care program is led by parent Sharolyn Smith. (678-423-3760; [email protected]). It is held on the first and third Saturdays of each month, 5:00- 9:00 p.m. at Community Christian Church (1717 Hwy 154, Sharpsburg, 30277). Parents volunteer to lead one evening session for students with special needs and their siblings and then receive three nights of childcare, free. Richard’s Respite Home in Carrollton serves clients with Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. They have four beds and clients must stay overnight. Reservations are required 30 days in advance. Clients may use the facility for up to 30 days/year. Clients may need extensive health care assistance, but the facility is not equipped to handle persons who may harm themselves or others, run-away, etc. Interested families may call the Home to receive an application. Clients are then invited to the home for an interview and tour. If accepted into the program, a care plan for the client is written. A physical exam, proof of income, etc. are part of admission consideration. Clients over 18 years of age pay $10/ day (one overnight), as individual (adult) income is considered. Children under 18 years old pay according to a sliding scale based on parents’ income. Contact Richard’s Respite Home directly at 770-830-1156.

For financial assistance for respite care:

 Families can apply for Medicaid waivers (used for respite) by contacting our Region One MHDDAD (Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases) office at 1-800-646-7721 and asking for an application for any waivers for which their child is eligible. (MHDDAD staff can help parents determine for which waivers to apply.)

 Families can apply for a Katie Beckett Waiver (Deeming Waiver) by filling out a packet available from the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFACS), 533 Hwy 29 North, Newnan, 30275; 770-254-7234.  Families of persons with Autism (of any age) can apply for Autism Family Support funds (up to $500/year) by contacting MHDDAD (info above) for an application. If approved, a family can ask that a respite provider be paid for services needed.

PASS program (Parents Assuring Student Success) PASSport to Success is a training program developed for parents to help their children develop a positive attitude toward learning and produce a productive home learning environment. You will learn ways to help your child manage time, listen, concentrate, manage homework, prepare for tests, and improve thinking and reading skills. From your efforts at home, your child's study habits will improve and so should grades and test scores. This program is offered at many schools in our county.
