Speeches:

“Being a New Driver” – Justin Cobkit Speech #3, Manual CC, Get to the Point, 5-7 Minutes  Objectives: Objectives: Select a speech topic and determine its general and specific purpose, organize the speech in a manner that best achieves those purposes, ensure the beginning, body and conclusion project sincerity and conviction, strive not to use notes.

Who remembers being a new driver? Justin got his 1st driver’s license a month ago. Although almost 18, he finally got the urge when he saw his friends driving. It is a license for freedom and fun! It is also useful! It provides the ability to arrive early or stay late for school and free up your parents. To get his license, Justin had to take driver’s education and a road test. It was terrible boring and mostly common sense. It required 7 long hours of training. He finally received his license and Dad said “Congrats but you are not going to drive!” Why? Very expensive. You need a car, gas and insurance. Insurance was $900 per year and Justin would need to pay it himself. Also, driving is dangerous. Right before his Dad told him he would not be driving, Justin had an accident. Hmmmm. ..

5 minutes 10 seconds “Electricity and Automobiles” - Ernie Pollitzer Speech # 2, Manual - Technical Presentation, The Proposal, 8 - 10 Minutes Objectives: Prepare a technical presentation advocating a product, service, idea or action. Present your viewpoint logically and convincingly, using an inverted pyramid. Effectively use visual aids to enhance the presentation.

We love automobiles and they have become a status symbol. Ernie brought to our attention how our use of electricity and automobiles is choking our environment and provides several solutions. Some ideas were already in place and a few are soon to come.

Ernie introduced us to the Smart Grid that can turn off your electricity when you are not home. We may have some concerns about food safety and the security of our homes in this event but it may eventually provide for better distribution of electricity (even if you have to reset your clocks).

Other ideas included energy audits, solar panels, and high efficiency windows.

Additionally, smaller cars are soon to come. How does 54.5 miles to the gallon grab you?

9 minute 10 seconds

“What Are You Driving” - Susan McMullen Speech #1, The Entertaining Speaker Time 5 – 7 minutes

Objectives: Entertain the audience by relating a personal experience. Organize an entertaining speech for maximum impact.

Cars can define our lives. Susan’s father worked for Pennzoil and she always wanted to be a race car driver. She really wanted a Corvette but didn’t get it. Her Dad drove a company car and she looked forward driving her first car – a blue Plymouth Valiant. She was very glad when she totaled it.

Then she got a blue Dodge Dart which promptly broke down on the way home! Following that was a Plymouth Volare which would turn off as soon as you pulled out in traffic.

Her Dad finally helped her buy her own 1st car. He paid $1000 and she paid $500. There were two choices: a red MG convertible and a red Chevy Vega. Guess which one she got? Since her sister drove a Ford Pinto it really wasn’t so bad. After school she moved up to a VW GTI Rabbit but then got married and had kids. At this point she realized you buy cars to fit your lifestyle. She is back again in a blue car with A/C and heated seats. It is the little things that count and cars are a symbol of where we are in life.

7 minutes 10 seconds

“An Interview with Dr. PowerPoint – An Improv Monodrama” - Tom Nixon Speech #1, The Interpretive Manual Time 5 – 7 minutes

Objectives: To understand the concept and mature of a monodrama To assume the identity of a character & portray the physical & emotional aspects of the character to the audience.

Not even sure where to begin on this one. Tom did push the boundaries and proved he could think on his feet. Kumar played the part of an interviewer and posed questions to Dr. Claude and Claudia PowerPoint, a seemingly two headed celebrity that used half a brain each. Claude and Claudia (played by Susan McMullen) joined together to answer questions regarding PowerPoint in synch! Unfortunately they went over the time limit and the episode was disqualified.
