Any skills or qualifications needed for entry into the class
No formal qualifications or experience necessary for this fun class. Just a willingness to have a go!
Course, including aims The aim of the course is to introduce students to the relief printmaking method of linocut and to build on existing skills. This is a hands-on course where you will be learning linocut, though we may introduce some monoprinting and look at how these methods can be combined to create hybrid prints. You will learn about and try different papers, how to design for print and transfer your design to the plate/block and how to ink up evenly with rollers. You will be using both hand burnishing and a press to create your prints. We will look at mark making with the tools, using transparent and opaque inks and creating colour blends. We will look at the Reduction method of creating multi coloured prints and for the more experienced students multi block lino will be introduced. In order that we can spend lots of class time making prints there will be some preparation of designs or plates expected at home prior to each class but full instructions will be given. You will be fully supported throughout. At the end of 10 weeks you will have created a series of unique prints.

Teaching and learning methods used
I will introduce each method with practical examples and demonstrations and then students will carry out supervised practical work in class and some work at home with written instructions. The work at home will be creating designs to use in class so we can concentrate in class on making printing plates and printing them. Cutting lino can also be continued at home but would require students to have their own tools. The advantage of this is more printing time in class. Each student will be given full notes to support the work in class and at home.
How progress and success will be recorded There are no exams but i will be continually supporting each student during the sessions to ensure they are progressing and enjoying the art of printmaking.
Additional Course Cost (e.g. visits, materials, books, equipment) £10 – to be paid on the first session. This covers the lino blocks, inks, paper, tissue, newsprint, blotting paper etc, used during the course.
Materials required for first Sketchbook, Apron/old shirt (this course can be messy), pencils, class rubber, scissors, coloured pencils, masking tape, graphite stick, tracing paper(for transferring designs) and if you have any printmaking tools then do bring them. You will be able to use my tools in class but if you want to cut lino at home then you will need to buy a simple set of lino tools (a handle with different blades between £4-7 depending on the number of blades) which can be bought from Tindalls in Cambridge, or online from www.greatart.co.uk or www.jacksonsart.com . You will also need a cutting mat and/or bench hook to cut lino safely at home.
