Airport Procedures

Honolulu International Airport –

Contact Honolulu Clearance Delivery on 121.4 stating requested departure route. Shoreline and freeway departures are noise sensitive during hours of darkness; altitudes assigned will be 1,500 feet or above, as assigned by ATC controller. Procedures include:

Shoreline Five: Stay within non-movement area (behind the solid and broken yellow lines), get your clearance and call the Tower. When the Tower clears you, look both ways and then taxi out onto and depart from taxiway Charlie, parallel to runway 4 right. Turn right prior to the intersection of runways 4 and 8 and proceed to the white tanks at Keehi Marina. Proceed outside Honolulu Harbor and along the shoreline to Ala Moana Beach Park, maintaining at or below 500 feet. Request climb to 1,000 feet and, when approved, climb to that altitude. Continue along the shoreline until departing Class B airspace. Departure Control Frequency will be 124.8 or 119.1 during the day, and 118.3 at night.

Freeway One: Stay within the non-movement area (behind the solid and broken yellow lines), get your clearance and call the Tower. When the Tower clears you, look both ways and then taxi out onto and depart from taxiway Charlie, parallel to runway 4 right. Turn right to overfly the freeway, resume own navigation via the freeway eastbound. Proceed via the highway along the shoreline until abeam Koko Head. Maintain 1,000 feet while in Class B airspace. Departure Control Frequency will be on 124.8 during the day and 118.3 at night.

Redhill Two: Stay within the non-movement area (behind the solid and broken yellow lines), get your clearance and call the Tower. When the Tower clears you, look both ways and then taxi out onto and depart from taxiway Charlie, parallel to runway 4 right heading to Tripler Hospital. Turn left northwest bound along the freeway until departing Class B airspace. Maintain 1,000 feet or assigned altitude while in Class B airspace. Departure Control Frequency will be 119.1.

West Loch Three: Stay within the non-movement area (behind the solid and broken yellow lines), get your clearance and call the Tower. When the Tower clears you, look both ways and then taxi out onto and depart from taxiway Charlie, and depart as per controller instructions:  Fly towards the tower, parallel runways 22, turn right as directed by controller, parallel north of runway 26R, continue to the West Loch of Pearl Harbor, or;  Cross over the intersections of runways 22/26R, parallel north of 26R, and continue to West Loch, or;  Go around the ends of runways 22/26, going east initially, then turn left, northwest bound, around the ends of the runways, parallel north of 26R, and continue to West Loch.

Fly direct to center of West Loch, climb to and maintain 1,000 feet, or as assigned. Stay clear of the Pearl Harbor TFR and remain south of Ford Island. Caution: VFR traffic proceeding eastbound from the west shoreline to H- 1/H-2 interchange may be descending to 2000 feet and below.

Kona Three: Stay within the non-movement area (behind the solid and broken yellow lines), get your clearance and call the Tower. When the Tower clears you, look both ways and then taxi out onto and depart from taxiway Charlie, and depart as per controller instructions. Turn left heading 180, then expect radar vectors eastbound, south of Diamond Head to avoid traffic inbound to runway 26L. Maintain 1,000 feet while in Class B airspace. Departure Control Frequency will be 124.8. Normal arrival procedures –

Contact Honolulu Approach on 119.1 and receive clearance prior to entering Class B airspace. Caution: There may be considerable traffic in the vicinity of the H-1/H-2 interchange and the Koko Head VOR. Airplanes are generally at or above 1,500 ft, so 1,000 ft. is recommended for helicopters. Over Pearl Harbor 360-degree turns may be done for the purpose of spacing and separation only, not sight-seeing. You may not loiter over nuclear facilities, submarines, and aircraft carriers.

While holding over the Airport Post Office, keep your holding pattern north of the International Airport Terminal Buildings. While waiting for clearance to cross the runways, do not fly over aircraft parked at their gates. Maintain between 500 and 800 feet while holding, or as directed by the Tower.

North Two Arrival: Contact Approach Control on 119.1 prior to the H-1/H-2 interchange. Expect clearance via the H-1/H-2 interchange at 2000’, Ford Island at 1500’, and the Navy/Marine Golf Course. You will be instructed to contact tower at Ford Island. Unless instructed otherwise proceed to the Navy/Marine Golf Course and hold. Tower may instruct you to hold at another location (Post Office, Inter-Island Terminal, United Terminal etc…) Cross the runways as per controller instructions:  When directed, cross at the intersections of runways 4L/R and 8L and maintain 500 feet or above. After crossing the runways, enter a right traffic pattern – turn right, parallel to Lagoon Drive, enter a right base leg over the South Ramp, then turn right on final to Taxiway Charlie. After pulling into a hover, taxi to parking; or,  When directed, cross runway 8L to the Honolulu Control Tower, then cross runways 4L and 4R west of Taxiway Foxtrot, then turn left on final to Taxiway Charlie. After pulling to a hover, taxi to parking; or  When directed, cross directly to Taxiway Charlie. After pulling to a hover, taxi to parking.  If you’re approaching from Kalaeloa, contact Approach at or before the Sugar Mill.

Freeway Two Arrival: Contact Approach Control on 119.1 prior to Koko Head at or above 2,000 feet. Expect routing via Koko Head, direct to the Waialae Golf Course, over the freeway to Punchbowl. Maintain 2,000 feet until advised by the Tower. When directed, descend towards the shoreline, and then direct to Taxiway Charlie. Taxi to parking. Note: Be aware of the runways. We are still responsible for our own traffic separation. If you are in doubt about anything, query ATC.

Because you are not on their frequency, Ground will be unable to communicate with you. Therefore, stay clear of taxiway Charlie except for takeoff and landing. Do not loiter on the painted Helipad. Other helicopter traffic may need to pass by the helipad in or out of the taxiway. Traffic patterns on Reef Alpha (Runway 8R) are usually conducted at 300 feet.

Kalaeloa Airport– Most traffic pattern training will be conducted at Kalaeloa Airport. Entry to Kalaeloa’s airspace will be from the H1- H2 interchange along the H-1 Freeway. Contact the tower when abeam the Waipahu sugar mill at or below 1,500 ft. MSL. When cleared into the airspace, you may proceed along the H-1 until reaching the rock quarry. There you turn left to enter the downwind leg for runway 4L at a 45 degree angle.

The traffic pattern altitude for Kalaeloa is 800 ft MSL. You may request a 500 ft pattern from the tower. During trade wind conditions runways 4L and 4R are in use. Make left traffic patterns for 4L and right traffic patterns for 4R. During Kona wind conditions, runways 22L and 22R will be in use. Make left and right traffic patterns respectively for each runway.

At all times no flight is permitted above the Campbell Industrial Park, located southwest of the airport. The boundary of the industrial park is marked by a large concrete channel. Also, when in traffic patterns on 4R or 22L, flight over the adjacent Coast Guard air station is to be avoided. Pattern altitude is 500 feet MSL. Any higher altitude must be approved by the tower. Approaches and takeoffs shall be conducted from the paved area. There is a left hand traffic pattern so as to avoid the runway 17 for south ramp bravo.
