Learning Activity 2: Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

The PNS is that portion of the nervous system outside the central nervous system (CNS). Its importance lies in irs ability to convey impulses to and from the brain or spinal cord. The nerves of the PNS are classified as cranial nerves (CNs) and spinal nerves. These, in turn, may be classified as:

* Sensory nerves (afferent): sensory neurons that convey impulses toward the CNS. * Motor nerves (efferent); motor neurons that convey impulses away from the CNS. * Mixed nerves: both sensory and motor neurons that convey impulses in both directions.
