COMMENT

Senator Byrd

One of the most consistent anti-immigration voting records in the Senate is that of Mr. Byrd, a Democrat. As the Wikipedia entry shows, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Byrd Mr. Byrd also has the dubious distinction of being the only member of Congress who was a Klu Klux Klan member. Although he has apologized repeatedly for his leadership role in the Klu Klux Klan as a young adult, his comments on race raise questions on where his heart really is on the matter ("I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side"). Democrats should take a leaf from the Republican playbook and criticize the bigots in its ranks.

(a) Dear Editor: In our article on the Senate points system (06/05/07 ID), we mildly chastise the drafters of Cantwell-Cornyn for "inexact drafting" of non-existent sections. An eagle eyed reader brought to our attention the text of another version of the Senate bill which does contain the proper references to which Cantwell-Cornyn refers. In our defense, we were working off of the full text posted on AILA Infonet on May 24th; clearly, in the rush of legislative events, proper bill nomenclature had changed. We regret any confusion caused and beg forgiveness from the able lawyers and Senate staffers drafting Cantwell-Cornyn who, it seems, were on target all along. Mea Culpa. Gary E. Endelman, Esq. and Asher Frankel, Esq. ______The first daily in the field of immigration. Forward this to a colleague!
