Dear Parent,

Re: Internal end-of-year examinations.

Please find enclosed the schedule of examinations for your child in the summer term. We are all aware of how important the next few months are and of the pressure your child is under.

In order to support them we are holding year group assemblies to give advice and guidance about how to approach revision and prepare thoroughly for examinations. This support will be continued in subject lessons, through homework, and with Form Tutors. In this way we aim to ensure that students feel supported and are well prepared to achieve their very best.

To support you at home we have identified some short videos available on YouTube and embedded them into our website. The videos capture and share advice and support for parents and students at this important time. We have also enclosed a “Student & Parent Revision Guide” which provides lots of useful tips on how to make revision manageable and productive. It is imperative that students are given guidance so that they produce their very best but do not feel overly stressed. Support is available on our website by clicking on the ‘student’ or ‘parent’ area then the ‘Revision and Study Support’ tab or you can follow the link below. It is important that you visit this link on a regular basis as updates will be provided.

Since September we have been developing ‘DIRT’ which is Dedicated, Improvement & Reflection Time. DIRT allows students to re-draft and improve their work following feedback from their teachers and takes place both in lessons and at home. At LSA, we are also working on developing a ‘growth mind-set’ within our students. This will ensure that all students understand and see the value of securing knowledge and skills through re-drafting and improving their work. As the curriculum becomes more linear and student outcomes determined by final assessment, such a mind-set will ensure that your child has the skills to know how to learn and prepare thoroughly for final examinations. Again, there are links available on the website which provide more information about ‘Fixed’ & ‘Growth’ mind-set and about moving from a mind-set which says ‘I can’t do this!’ to one which says ‘I can’t do this yet!’

Working together on all of the above means that we can provide best support for your child as they prepare for challenging examinations, please start by making a note of the dates of each examination and helping your son or daughter in organising their revision. Please also note that where a student does not achieve their potential, we will provide a resit opportunity after a period of further teaching and support. In this way, we will ensure that students develop the necessary approach for them to do their very best in an assessment system which is now very heavily weighted towards end-of-course examinations.

We trust the above meets with your approval and would like to thank you for your continued support, if however, you have any queries or would like further advice and guidance, then please do not hesitate to contact us.
