Welcome to the

2014-2015 Sidekick newspaper!

2014-2015 Sidekick Goals Editors 1. Raise $2,500 in fundraisers through two events: one is a tailgate in the fall; one is a 5K in the spring 2. Have an overall bigger social media presence with our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts 3. Have all six issues exported on time 4. We have done great as a student resource, so let's focus on being a community resource for all of Coppell a wider array of events 5. Get everyone on staff to attend conventions and monthly Sidekick socials

Adviser

1. Each staff member consistently meets their deadlines for all Sidekick and Coppell Student Media assignments throughout the school year, allowing the Sidekick staff to meet group deadlines, such as page designs, copy editing and revisions, timely online content, art (photos and graphics/infographics), etc. 2. Each staff member follows the process and procedures set forth by Sidekick editors and the adviser, such as saving/prepping photos and associated cutlines properly, placing stories/content in appropriate folders/location, checking email daily and other correspondence, etc. 3. The Sidekick enhances its online presence with a balanced update of all social media accounts, notably Facebook, Twitter (@CHSCampusNews and @SidekickSports) and Instagram. These accounts establish themselves as a valued resource for campus, district and community news with activity throughout the school day, as well as weekends and school holidays. Use campus hash tags #CHSWeAreOne and #CHSLeads 4. Each staff member honors all commitments and exhibits ethical behavior. The expectation is for all staff members to attend meetings and to make arrangements with other school activities and/or places of employment. It includes always returning an email or phone call from a source or business, not backing out of a Sidekick-related event during non-school hours, showing up on time and prepared for assignments, etc. 5. The time spent in the D115 newsroom is the most rewarding and enjoyable part of each day. Work hard and have fun. EDITING

All content (stories, cutlines, videos, etc.) must be viewed and edited by the adviser prior to posting to Coppell Student Media. This process must take place during the course of a newspaper class period unless other arrangements have been made with the adviser. During the editing process, the journalist must sit with the adviser and pay close attention to all edits and ask/answer any necessary questions. Journalists should have all notes and reporting materials available when editing.

EMAIL

Journalists are expected to check their Coppell ISD Gmail account on a regular basis. This is how the adviser will be communicating with the staff outside of the newsroom. Accessing CISD mail should be incredibly convenient with each reporter possessing a CHS issued iPad.

EQUIPMENT

Upon checking out Sidekick and Coppell Student Media equipment (such as cameras), journalists are responsible for any damage or lost items to the equipment while it is in their possession. Photographers must return cameras with clear memory cards (you need to remove all of your photos prior to returning the camera) and batteries with a full charge. Items must be signed out from the D115 newsroom. Failure to properly checkout/return equipment results in losing access to Sidekick/CSM equipment. Equipment must be returned before school the following day so that it is available for all journalists each day.

HEADPHONES

Headphones are allowed for journalists when working on newspaper assignments. Journalists are not allowed to wear headphones (meaning both ear buds out of their ears) when being addressed by the adviser or other journalists. Be respectful. The adviser does encourage journalists to be engaged in the conversation and with their fellow journalists. Simply coming in and putting your headphones on for 52 minutes every day in the newsroom can really isolate a journalist from the group and we want everybody in the group to be engaged and a part of our great product. iPADS

Reporters are expected to have their CHS issued iPads every day in the newsroom. You are expected to have a fully charged device and/or your own charger if needed.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION All requests must be submitted 21 days prior to the day you need the letter. Submissions must be listed by signing the form in the D115 newsroom. Requests cannot be made via email. If you submit a request through Naviance, please list this on the submission form as well.

LUNCH

The D115 newsroom is not available for Sidekick staff during C lunch unless you have approval from the adviser. This is time where the adviser needs to meet with other teachers and take a lunch break to tend to other business.

NEWSROOM DECORUM

While in the D115 newsroom, journalists are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. The Sidekick prides itself on establishing a relaxed, comfortable, family environment. Take into the account the feelings and needs of other journalists in regards to the volume, tone and content of your conversations. If a conversation needs to be done in private, please respect the feelings of journalists and step outside to the hallway or meet at a different time and location.

Return all items to their proper location, such as laptops and other equipment. Reporters need to be respectful of the environment and not leave any items, specifically trash from food and drink, in the classroom.

PASSING PERIOD

Sidekick journalists are expected to aware of the time and use their time in the D115 newsroom wisely. Journalists are discouraged from asking the adviser or editor to edit an assignment in the last moments of class or during passing period. Make sure you save at least 10 minutes for this process. The adviser needs to use the passing period to prepare for the next class and will not write late passes for reporters.

SIDEKICK ID

Each Sidekick staff member will receive a staff ID card. It is the expectation that this ID is worn at all times when outside the newsroom working on Coppell Student Media related assignments. You will not be allowed to leave the newsroom without your ID to work on assignments so it is imperative that you bring it to class every day. Possessing a Sidekick ID is a privilege and abusing the pass can result in a suspension of your responsibilities. You cannot use the ID for free admission to events you are not coverage for Coppell Student Media or provide it to a CHS faculty member as a pass on campus when you are not working in Sidekick assignments. EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP

Editor-In-Chief: Alex Nicoll

Lead editor of The Sidekick newspaper and Coppell Student Media, manages and leads all staff meetings and events, heads staff editorial board, edits and reviews final pages of print edition, creates weekly budget for online, Page 1 print designer, meets weekly with managing editor and adviser to review budget, works as liaison and meets regularly with KCBY directors. Lead copy editor for sports section and schedules/coordinates all sports coverage.

Managing Editor: Jena Seidemann

Lead copy editor of all content for The Sidekick and Coppell Student Media, assigns all deadlines for stories and assignments in both print and online, determines Page 1 content, works with EIC to enforce all deadlines and accountability, section editors report to managing editor. Lead copy editor for editorial section.

Enterprise Editor: Kara Hallam

Oversees Page 1 centerpiece, centerspread copy and featured online stories. Lead editor of in-depth reporting. Copy edits and/or writes enterprise pieces for both print and online. Oversees multimedia online packages in conjunction with the KCBY staff.

EDITORIAL LEADERSHIP

News Editor: Summer Crawford – oversees News section through copy editing, scheduling and budgeting. Schedules attendance of all Coppell City Council meetings, Coppell ISD board meetings and other important local meetings and events.

Student Life Editor: Allie Arnold – oversees Student Life section through copy editing, scheduling and budgeting

Entertainment Editor: Stephanie Alexander – oversees Entertainment section through copy editing, scheduling and budgeting

Design Editor: Rachel Buigas-Lopez Lead page designer of print edition of The Sidekick and designer of six centerspreads. Assists in graphics/illustration assignments.

Graphics/Illustrations Editor: Josh Martin – Lead graphics/infographics editor and assigns all graphics to other designers. Coordinates staff cartoon for each issue. Assists in page designs.

Photography Editor: Nicole Messer – oversees photo assignments, event coverage and editing. Copy edits all cutlines. Oversees organization and workflow of all Sidekick/CSM photos

BUSINESS/PUBLIC RELATIONS LEADERSHIP

Business/Public Relations Manager: Tuulia Koponen

Handles business affairs ranging from subscriptions, fundraisers, advertising, social media management, etc. Produces weekly newsletter (e-mail blast) to be shared with staff. STAFF EXPECTATIONS

Executive leadership ● 3 stories per six weeks ● 1 editors lesson per six weeks Section editors ● 4 stories per six weeks ● 1 editors lesson per six weeks Staff writers ● 1 story per week (don’t panic as this does not all have to be 500 plus word stories. Stories can be news, features, reviews, columns, blogs, sports dailies/gamers, Q&A’s, etc.). Each writer is responsible for publishing on his or her assigned day every week. Photographers ● Each photographer will be assigned on day of the week for Photo of The Day ● One Photo Gallery per week Graphic Designers ● Deadlines come about as stories develop ● Required to create at least two infographics per week Business staff ● Must sell $100 worth of advertising (web or print) each two weeks ($300 per each six weeks)

1. Be on the look out for new story ideas, if you can't write it somebody else can. 2. Meet your deadlines, if something comes up or a source cancels, let an editor know we would be happy to figure something out with you. 3. Uphold the social media guidelines; you and your parents signed a contract. 4. Communication is key, don't be afraid to talk to the editors or ask for help we don't bite. 5. PHOTOGRAPHY PROCEDURES

Each section will have the following folders on the Google Drive

For example: October folder > Photos > (Name)

There will be a Nicole folder with individual folders for Aubrie, Chelsea, Amanda, Kelly, Stephanie and Christianna. In each person’s folder, they will need to make another folder for each assignment they have with the title of the event and the name of the staff writer (ex: Holiday House – Alex Nicoll). Along with uploading the photos to the photographer’s folders, each photographer will be responsible for creating a Google Doc with cutlines for each photo. They will then need to have their cutlines and photos approved by Nicole and/or Mr. Wofford.

From here, the writers will be able to access and choose what they would like to publish along with their story.

PHOTO/GRAPHIC ASSIGNMENT PROCEDURES

1. Writer submits photo assignment to photo editor or graphic assignment to design editor for approval. The request must be completed and descriptive, otherwise it will not be accepted. 2. Upon approval, photo/design editor assigns to photographer/graphic designer and deadline is posted on storyboard. Talk to the writer and/or read the story so you have a clear understanding of your assignment. 3. When on assignment, take a variety of photos (vertical, horizontal, different angles, types of action – we want flexibility). After photos have been taken, photographer places a minimum of 12 photos in photo editor’s folder for that section for approval. 4. Photo editor will approve (or ask photographer to submit new photos) 5-7 photos for photographer to prep and place these photos back in the photographer’s folder (again, in that section) to prep. - For graphics, graphic designer will place graphic in design editor’s folder for approval. Upon approval, design editor will move it back to the graphic designer’s folder (in that section) to prep. After graphic is prepped, it is placed in “Art To Be Placed” folder for that section. (Note: graphic designer must have Mr. Wofford approve the graphic once it is prepped and saved in the correct folder).

1. Photographer will write cutlines for all of the 5-7 photos approved by photo editor and prep these photos for publication. Cutlines will be written on a Google Doc and saved inside the assignment folder with your prepped photos.

REMINDERS:

When photos/graphics are completed, it is the writer’s responsibility to post the art with their story. However, photographers/graphic designers are expected to notify Mr. Wofford if they have a completed assignment that has been not been posted to an online story by deadline.

All Files saved as follows: (Note: I STRONGLY recommend you use Adobe Bridge to name your photos – it makes it really easy to batch name numerous photos. See Mr. Wofford for a quick less as it’s simple and quick. I promise you it will save you A LOT of time). Your folders of assignments (ones within your folders titled with your name) will have each individual assignment folder titled as follows:

Workflow: Follow the follow steps when uploading, editing and prepping photos. Be sure to have both color and grayscale versions for print stories.

Workflow steps

1. Download, delete, batch name 2. Photo credit/caption – file info 3. Level, rotate, crop 4. Image size 5. Adjust brightness, contrast and color balance using levels 6. All other cleanup 7. Unsharp mask 8. Mode – RGB/CMYK/Grayscale 9. Save As Cutlines: ALWAYS clearly include the 5 W’s and H

CSM photos/graphics for CSM: JPEGs and always (unless told otherwise) color Print photos/graphics: Save as TIFFs. Grayscale if on pages 2-11, 14-23 but always maintain a color version. Color photos for 1, 12, 13, 24 must be in CMYK, not RGB.

Graphic designers: By the end of class each Friday, email Mr. Wofford your two (or more) graphics for blog posts for the week.

Photo of the Day: POTD must be posted on your assigned day by the end of your class period. Photographers must bring back a minimum of 5 photos for approval from Mr. Wofford and have him edit your cutline before posting your POTD. Photographers can only switch POTD assignments if they are absent on their assigned day.

Photo galleries: Photo gallery topics must be submitted to the photo editor and approved in advance to the deadline. Each gallery must have a minimum of 6 photos with cutlines. Galleries must be posted on the day of your deadline by the end of class. Before posting the gallery, photos and cutlines must be edited and approved by Mr. Wofford.

Event coverage: Photo editor will assign event coverage to photographers. Attendance is mandatory and it is the photographers responsibility to arrange for a replacement in extreme circumstances (such as photographer is sick, family emergency, etc. Having homework or a test the next day or a social activity does not classify as an acceptable reason to miss an event).

Photographer is expected to photograph the event’s entirety and cannot leave early or arrive late. All events of significance (such has sporting events, performances, EXPOs, etc.) held on campus require a photographer.

Photos from an event must be posted within 24 hours either as an additional POTD or with the writer’s story/blog. If your gallery deadline is within the 24 hours (the following day), this event can count for your gallery. You can always post more than the minimum number of photo galleries but you cannot post your gallery prior to your deadline day and have it count for that deadline.

With anything, your photos and cutlines must go through the editing process with Mr. Wofford.

QUICK SUMMARY

1. Photo/Design editor receives requests and assigns 2. Deadline for Art will be written on storyboard. NOTE: This is when the photos/graphics have been approved, prepped, cutlines edited and all is ready for publication. 3. JPEG/color for web; TIFF/grayscale (except four 4 pages) for print. But even for grayscale, always keep a color version of the photo. 4. Check your folders everyday 5. Take a variety of photos, not just a few of the same action 6. Arrive early, move around, stay late when shooting events 7. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER stage a photo or recreate an action. Know the difference between a portrait and staged photo 8. Save your photos correctly – both how they are prepped and how they are title. 9. Mr. Wofford edits all cutlines before posting. Do not post anything until it has been approved and edited. 10. As a member of The Sidekick family, you will be held accountable for creating wonderful graphics that will compliment the story they are attached to. Not only that, but you must follow these guidelines to make sure that your graphics are Sidekick- appropriate and completed in the correct format in order to make them easy to use both on web and in print.

1. To begin, you will begin your graphic after receiving a graphic request from Josh (through email, unless we decide to change our way of communication). The request will include the writer, a summary of the story and a possible idea suggestion for said graphic (feel free to get creative though).

2. After looking at the story summary and the suggestion, you may begin your graphic!!!! If you have any questions about the story, make sure to go straight to the writer for clarification. If you need assistance with Photoshop, illustrator, or anything graphic-wise, contact Josh or Rachel with any questions you have.

3. Once you have completed your graphic, you need to show it to Josh or Rachel for approval (or whoever is in your class period). This will be shared either through email or the sshare, we will figure this out once the school year actually begins.

4. After your graphic has been approved, you must save your graphic in the following formats: 1. Original PSD or Illustrator file (in case of edits) 2. Color JPG file - WEBSITE 3. Black/white TIFF file - PRINT Save all these formats in your own personal folder. Save the color JPG file in the folder of the staff writer so they may post it online. Save the black/white TIFF in graphics folder that will be within the “photos to be placed” folder if the story and graphic will be put in print.

If you have any questions with the process, feel free to ask us, we would love to help! We know that all this information is probably overwhelming and slightly confusing, but we promise it will make more sense once you begin working. Coppell Student Media: Social Media Contract

As a member of 2014-2015 The Sidekick staff, you are a representative of Coppell Student Media even when you are not in the classroom. Even though you may not intend to misrepresent The Sidekick, you are doing so when you post inappropriate content to your personal social media accounts.

Through this policy, we are not trying to control your personal social media accounts. We appreciate the freedom of expression social media offers the journalism world, but there is a large sense of responsibility involved.

By signing this contract, you agree to be accountable for any social media post deemed inappropriate. These include, but are not limited to the following examples: ● Pictures with illegal substances (alcohol, drugs, etc.) ● Criticizing our publication (complaining, being rude to staff members) ● Posting news information that has not been confirmed ● Criticizing fellow staff members on newspaper and teachers ● Posting racial, sexual, or discriminatory joke ● This includes not only what you post, but also the posts you respond to, whether it is through a retweet, favorite, share, or like.
