VOLUNTEER OR SERVANT? By: Lance Leavens
I was recently reading the gospel of Mark and came across the following verses, “Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45).
As I read this verse, I was reminded of some comments made by Brother James Whitmire. His comments centered around this question: As Christians, do we view ourselves as volunteers or servants?
That really is a powerful question because there is a fundamental difference between the two. Jesus tells us how we should answer the question in the verses above. In fact, Jesus takes it a step further by introducing the word slave. Jesus did not recruit volunteers. He called people to be servants. He did this because that is how He viewed himself. “But made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7).
Slave is really a better translation of the Greek word duolos that is many times translated servant in our Bibles. A slave is someone that is owned by someone else. As Christians, we are owned by Christ. He has purchased us with His own blood (I Peter 1:18, 19).
How we view ourselves in our relationship with Christ and in our work for Him is critical. As slaves, we really don’t have a choice in our service to God. All we can really do is obey Him.
There is no question how we view ourselves in this regard will have a profound impact on our involvement. So the question is how do you view yourself, volunteer or servant?
