Objective: 8. I will be able to describe our new “Make the Impossible Possible Competition” and explain its importance to our class and our goals.

Essential Question: “What is it that makes someone powerful?”

Read the selection below, and then answer the questions that follow it. So … first semester is finished, and second semester is starting quickly. We also have a HUGE goal we are working toward … writing a DBQ as seventh graders! On top of that, we have AMAZING things to earn in the next TWO WEEKS … a feature film AND our first Socratic seminar in history! We will get all of this done, and we will do it with HALF the time that English and math get. It sounds impossible! To make this happen, we are learning a new, powerful, and fun classroom system … the Make the Impossible Possible Competition! That’s our big goal for the day.

Remember our old friend SOAPS? We learned already that the first ‘S’ stands for “subject,” and the ‘O’ stands for “occasion.” We will tackle two more letters today, the ‘A’ and the second ‘S.’ (We need to save the ‘P’ for last. You’ll see why soon….) We are on our way to our DBQ!

A = Audience: Next we have to figure out who was supposed to see the primary source. This person or group of people is called the audience.

S = Speaker: The second ‘S’ stands for speaker. Who produced this primary source? What kind of person was the photographer? Who was the writer? Who was the artist?

1. Which two letters are we learning today? ______and ______2. Which letter are we skipping? ______3. The first new letter stands for ______. 4. The second new letter stands for ______. Above and beyond: What do you think the last letter stands for?

------STOP! GO A&B, BUT DON’T START THE NEXT SECTION!------

Directions: Now let’s practice! Identify the audience and speaker for each of the following primary sources. All of the answers are listed in the answer bank. (You can just write the letter, if you’re out of room.)
