Jonathan Webb September 14, 2004 Project Idea

After some research on the net I came across this article published by the United

Nations. This article addresses many of the issues which we discussed in class. What I liked about this particular article is that is directly links to the sustainable development and its relation to tourism. It mentions that there has never actually been, until a few years ago, anyone to record tourism date and there is still no formal way to indicate and record sustainable development through tourism in St. Lucia and more specifically along the beach. Possibly, an idea that could be turned into a project is we could aid in researching what sustainable development in the tourism industry has been that has had a successful outcome.

We could do this by interviewing local residents, farmers, hotel spokes people, and other NGO’s to get their opinions on what progress has been made. While we are collecting that information we could also ask what improvements they would like to see both economically and environmentally and then we could transmit this information to the proper institution. With such a wide variety of people who could give their input on their life and having it communicated by university students would be a great up-to-date indicator on the quality of life and environment on the island. An organization mentioned on the website called CAST (Caribbean Alliance For Sustainable Tourism) has been working to try and breach the communication gap on St. Lucia and other islands to get a better sense of the sustainable development and they could or provide a reference to a smaller/ more local agency who would be happy to accommodate us.
