COSMETOLOGY INSPECTOR

DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, inspects sanitary conditions within beauty salons, issues licenses as warranted, investigates complaints, and proctors cosmetology written examinations; performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned.)

Inspects beauty salons and schools in an assigned area of the state to determine if the sanitary conditions of the facility and equipment meet state statutes, rules and regulations and to determine the renewal and classification of licensure.

Investigates complaints and/or inquiries regarding salons and/or licensees within assigned geographical area to determine if action is warranted or if no violation actually exists.

Compiles data for and writes inspection reports and complaint investigation reports to note observed violations and seek enforcement as needed.

Inspects new salons and issues approvals for them to operate; views potential salon locations to determine their suitability for future salon use.

Consults with licensees to advise on and interpret applicable statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to the cosmetology profession.

Proctors written cosmetology licensing examinations to ensure compliance with licensing examination procedures.

Assists cosmetologists in updating their licenses or to obtain new licenses.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: (These may be acquired on the job and are needed to perform the work assigned.)

Knowledge of: state statutes, rules and regulations governing the cosmetology profession and sanitation procedures.

Ability to: write clearly and concisely in a documentary manner without inserting editorial comment; interpret and enforce statutory requirements for cosmetology licensure; motivate licensees to comply with statutes, rules and regulations related to the practice of cosmetology; determine and evaluate conditions relating to practice and competency and identify areas of non-compliance; arrange travel itineraries to make maximum use of allocated mileage and time. ENTRY KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: (Applicants will be screened for possession of these through written, oral, performance, and/or other evaluations.)

Knowledge of: current principles, practices and materials used in the cosmetology profession; salon and beauty school operation.

Ability to: communicate orally and in writing and interact with persons of divergent backgrounds to exchange information related to cosmetology practice; compile and evaluate data and make accurate judgments to formulate sound recommendations; maintain confidentiality, as warranted, of information gathered through inspections and investigations; travel frequently.

Licensure as a cosmetologist in the State of Nebraska.
