SUMMARY: This position is responsible for maintaining, installing, operating and repairing wiring systems, equipment and related apparatus.
Duties & Responsibilities: Dismantles electrical machinery and replaces defective electrical or mechanical parts such as brushes and armatures. Installs and maintains various types of motors, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers. Installs and monitors performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement. Installs grounding leads. Interprets blueprints; works from sketches or verbal instructions. Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, repairs, and adjusts electrical fixtures, apparatus, equipment, wiring, and new services to include panels, breakers, and conduit. Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications. Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments. Troubleshoots and repairs electric controls, motor control centers, and programmable logic controls. Lead, guide, and/or train apprentices in applicable procedures and techniques; Operate and maintain high voltage switchgear and controls; repair and maintain motor control centers and programmable logic controls. Troubleshoot and repair primary distribution system malfunctions such as ground fault tracing and cable replacement; Diagnose problems and/or failures in electrical panels and systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair and replacement needs; Plan electrical secondary system additions or modifications; Change ballasts, lights, components, fixtures throughout the campus as needed; Work through the TMA work order system to prioritize and plan out work assignments daily; Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices; Inform supervisor of procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing necessary information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with building and safety regulations; Maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability of such tools for safe operating conditions; Participate in workshops, trainings, and seminars for gathering information required to perform job functions; Prepare written materials (i.e., repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information; Repair or replace a variety of electrical items, systems, and/or components for the purpose of ensuring a safe working environment; Request equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair; Respond daily to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns; Transport a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of ensuring availability of materials as required at the job site; Read, employ, and update electrical panel schedules and building or system blueprints; Maintain regular attendance; Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION: High school graduate or GED EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Journeyman Electrician's License; Second Electrical License or a License in a Related Construction Trade.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must hold a valid journeyman Electrician Certification (EE-98J or EE-1J) accepted by the New Mexico Construction Industries Division; Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, holidays, odd hours, and emergency calls Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment. Ability to install and maintain motors, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers. Knowledge of electrical systems including planning additions or modifications on secondary circuits. Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade. Ability to install grounding leads. Ability to read commercial electrical blueprints and apply NEC through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work. Ability to use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test electrical circuits, equipment and appliances. Ability to diagnose and repair electrical controls, industrial motor control centers, and programmable logic controllers. Ability to schedule activities; gather collate, and/or classify data. Ability to use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test electrical circuits, equipment and appliances. Ability to lead and train staff and/or students. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment. Ability to problem solve is required to identify issues and create action plans. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work as part of a team or independently.
