ENGINEERING 100W HOMEWORK #3 Dr. Thalia Anagnos

Objectives of Assignment:  Narrow a broad topic down to a more specific topic that is manageable to study  Perfect your use of keywords to find information about a topic  Find two resources on a particular research project (one of which much be from a scholarly source)

Due Date: Monday, February 12 (information will be used in lab writing assignment)

Assignment: 1. Select a general topic related to research in Antarctica that is of interest to you. (Examples of research in Antarctica are listed at the end of this assignment. The list is not complete; it is just to give you some ideas.) 2. Do a little Internet research to identify two or three benefits or outcomes that could result from this research. List them in Table 1 on the back of this assignment. 3. As you do this, start to compile a list of keywords in Table 2. 4. Select one of the above outcomes/benefits and identify two or three studies that are going on in Antarctica whose results will contribute to that outcome. List these in Table 3. 5. Select one of the research projects and find at least two resources that discuss this project. a. Document your database search process and the resources in Tables 4 and 5. b. At least one of the resources must be a scholarly source. 6. Read the resources over the weekend and bring them to lab on Monday February 12, as they will be used as background for your in-class essay.

Research in Antarctica:  Long term ecological research (LTER) such as vegetative change, rainfall manipulation, desertification  Remote sensing (very low frequency (VLF) waves, aerial photos, satellite imagery, sensors, unmanned aircraft and balloons, etc.)  Impact of magnetic storms on radio and satellite transmission  CO2 and other atmospheric gases that affect the ozone layer  Changing magnetic field of the Earth  Sea level rise and glacial melting  Cosmic microwave radiation and the origin of the universe  Volcanic activity at Mt. Erebus  Conservation and fisheries management  Polar medicine and its possible impact on space medicine  Impacts of humans on penguin populations  Clean (renewable) energy sources  Biodiversity and resilience of natural systems to environmental change
