When all is ready the CM says: CM Welcome, everyone, to the Celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus on this Easter morning, 20____.

Dear friends in Christ: on this most holy night, when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from death to life, the Church invites her children throughout the world to come together in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of the Lord.

The Electric Flame in the Sanctuary is switched ON.

Youth Group # 1 dance around the Flame and then dance through the Nave to Front Door.

Easter Vigil - 1 When they have arrived at the Front door the CM says:

CM Please STAND….. and turn towards the Front Door.

The Presider greets the Assembly. P Grace, mercy, and peace in abundance from our loving God and Christ Jesus our Lord be with you all. All And also with you.

BLESSING OF THE NEW FIRE

P Creator God, we gather here in darkness as a community to thank you for your mighty works: CREATION and REDEMPTION. At the dawn of creation there was Fire. Fire flared forth and revealed Creator God. Fire was the source of life: through Fire all living things came into being. Fire became the Light of all that lives. Fire brought forth the life that became the Light shining in the darkness -- Jesus, the Light of the world. Gathered to celebrate the Light that dwells among us… we pray:

God of all that lives, bless + this new fire. Inflame us with new hope; set our hearts ablaze with the fire of your love, that we may come one day to the feast of eternal light. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

ALL Amen. (Sung)

Easter Vigil - 2 Paschal Candle

The Blessing The Paschal Candle is presented to the Deacon who holds it in position for the Presider

The Assembly may be requested to repeat the words of the Presider. The Presider traces on the cross, saying: Christ yesterday and today(as he traces the vertical arm of the cross) the beginning and the end (the horizontal arm) the Alpha (alpha, above the cross) and the Omega. (omega, below the cross) All time belongs to him, (the first numeral, in the upper left corner of the cross) and all the ages. (the second numeral, in the upper right corner) To him be glory and power, (the third numeral in the lower left corner) through every age for ever. (the last numeral in the lower right corner) AMEN.

The insertion of the five grains of incense. By his holy 1 and glorious wounds may Christ the Lord 4 2 5 guard us and keep us. AMEN 3

The priest lights the Paschal Candle from the new fire, saying:

P May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

Deacon The Light of Christ.

ALL Thanks be to God.

Easter Vigil - 3 Solemn Procesion Candle-lighters (Youth Group #1) now take their light from the Paschal Candle. They light the candles of the assembly at the sides only so that they do not “interfere” with the Deacon and SA’s. The Deacon proceeds slowly towards the Sanctuary. He stops at the 2nd Door and sings ‘Ang Liwanag ni Kristo”; Assembly sings “Salamat sa Diyos” ‘The Light of Christ’; Assembly sings: ‘Thanks be to God.’ He does the same at the 1st Door…. and again at the foot of the Sanctuary. He then ascends to the middle of the Sanctuary and places the Candle on the Stand.

EASTER PROCLAMATION - exultet (Reduced because of time constraints)

Group #2 performs a Creative Dance (e.g. Pandanggo sa Ilaw) to honor the Paschal Candle. Deacon / Cantor incenses the Candle, then sings / recites the Exultet. He may have a companion who recites the”Said” pieces. People sing suitable responses. Assembly remains STANDING throughout.

Sung Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! Rejoice and dance, bright stars and blazing suns! Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation! [Organist plays a musical phrase from any Trumpet Voluntary. e.g. Purcell] Let our joyful voices resound this night! Let God’s people rejoice on this Day of Days. With joyful hearts and spirits set afire draw near to sing this Easter Candle’s praise! The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Said We praise you, God, for all your works of light! We bless you for that burst of fire and flame through which you first created all that is: a living universe of soaring stars, of space and spinning planets, surging seas, that cradle earth and rock against her breast. Easter Vigil - 4 Sung Glory and praise to you, O God! O Lord of heaven and the earth, all creation owes its life to you, the source and fountan of all life and love.

Said For, Father, it was your own light and love that led your people Israel dry-shod through foaming seas, and brought them safe at last to lands of milk and honey. In your love you led them as a shining cloud by day and as a flaming shaft of fire by night.

Ref. Christ is risen from the dead. We are raised with him to new life!

Sung O night, more holy than all other nights, your watchful eyes beheld, in wondrous awe, the triumph of our Savior over sin, the rising of the Deathless One from death!

Ref. Christ is risen from the dead. We are raised with him to new life!

Said And so, our God, Creator of all life, with open hearts and hands we come to you. Anointed with the Spirit’s power, we bear these precious glowing gifts of fire and flame.

Sung For you alone are God, living and true. All glory, praise and power belong to you with Jesus Christ, the One who conquered death, and with the Spirit blest for evermore. AMEN. (Celtic)

N And now… the LITURGY of the WORD. (pause)

We will listen attentively to the Word of God, recalling how God saved his people throughout history and, in the fullness of time, sent his own Son to be our Redeemer. Through this Easter celebration, may God bring to perfection the saving work already begun in us.

A. Old Testament

On the screen is flashed: “PAMBUNGAD SA SALITA NG DIYOS”

1. CREATION (Power Point Presentation to prepare the Assembly for the scientific description of the creation of the Universe)

R1 At nagkaroon nga.

[pause]

Easter Vigil - 9 2. ABRAHAM (Genesis 22: 1–18)

N In our tradition, Abraham is our Father in faith. He trusted God. He believed God’s promises.

‘Dialogue’. A father tells the story of Abraham to his son. (They may sit in a prominent place, e.g. on the steps of the Sanctuary)

Easter Vigil - 11 3. MOSES (Exodus: 14 : 15-18, 21a, 22-23, 26-27a, 28a-29; 15:20)

N Around twelve hundred years before the coming of Jesus, Moses led the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt into the land and freedom promised by God.

Easter Vigil - 12 [The Assembly immediately sings Miriam’s Song]

SONG SONG OF THE SEA

[Lady Cantor sings at Ambo]

ALL (Ref) Let us sing to the Lord, For God has covered himself in glory.

C The Pharaoh’s chariot he hurled into the sea, drowned in the Reed Sea the pick of his company. Flood waters covered them, over them alone, Sunk into the depths of the water like a stone. (Ref)

You led out in your love the people you had made your own, to plant them on the mountain where you set your throne, the dwelling place, O Lord, which your hands sustain. Forever and ever, the Lord shall reign. (Ref)

Prayer III

P Let us pray: God of our ancestors, in the new covenant you shed light on the wonders you worked in ancient times. With mighty hand and outstretched arm you led your people Israel through the desert. The Red Sea is a symbol of our baptism, and the nation you freed from slavery is a sign of your Christian people. May every nation share the faith and privilege of Israel and come to new birth in the Holy Spirit. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Easter Vigil - 13 4. THE POWER OF THE WORD [Isaiah 55:1a, 2a, 10, 11]

N Isaiah proclaims that the Word of God is powerful; it succeeds in what it is sent to do.

ALL Salamat sa Diyos.

N Every year, God’s people celebrated their liberation from slavery in Egypt.

Despite the fact that they broke the covenant that God made with them in the desert God still loved his people and promised to give them a new heart… a new spirit… a new covenant. Through the prophets God nurtured the hope of salvation. One of these prophets was Ezekiel. God said to him:

GOSPEL (Matthew 28:1-10)

P: + A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew:

After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men.

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.”

So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; There they will see me.”

5. ANG BUTIL NG TRIGO – Juan 12:22-23 (v. 24)

N: The 5th Sunday is special for all those searching for the face of God.

6. HOSANNA KAY KRISTONG HARI – Mk 11:1-10 (v. 8-10)

N Last Sunday we rejoiced as Jesus entered Jerusalem

7. PAGHAHATI NG TINAPAY – Juan 13:1-15 (v. 12,13)

N On Thursday Evening we celebrated the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. We recalled that during the Meal Jesus gave us a new commandment.

8. PAGPAPAKASAKIT NI KRISTO – Juan Ch. 18 & 19 (v. 30)

GOSPEL (Mark 16:1-8)

P A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the Mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus.

And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.

As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.

But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him” But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.”

So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

N: This Lent, we, and all preparing for Baptism, met Jesus in our Gospels Readings. We saw his humanity:

GOSPEL (Luke 24:1-12)

P + A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body.

While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.”

Then the women remembered Jesus’ words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.

These words seemed to the apostles an idle tale, and they did not believe the women. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

R6 A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Church at Rome (Romans 6:3-11)

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

The Word of the Lord.

ALL Thanks be to God.

Baptismal Font is placed in a prominent position in the Sanctuary.

Deacon takes the Paschal Candle and stands near the Font.

Easter Vigil - 27 Blessing of Water P Your unseen power, O God, accomplishes the wonders of salvation through sacramental signs. Throughout the ages, you made water a rich symbol of the grace you give us in baptism.

At the very dawn of creation your Spirit hovered over the waters, making them the fountain of all holiness.

In the waters of the great flood you pre-figured the mystery of re-birth where sin was drowned and a life of grace was brought forth.

Through the waters of the Red Sea You led Israel out of slavery, to be an image of God’s holy people, set free from sin by baptism.

In the waters of the Jordan Your son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit.

Father, look now with love upon your Church, that this life-giving water may flow abundantly on our candidates for baptism and all of us renewing our baptismal promises today.

The priest may lower the Easter candle into the water either once or three times, as he continues:

Through your Son, let the power of the Holy Spirit descend upon the waters of this font.

He holds the candle in the water:

May all who are buried with Christ by baptism into death rise with him to undying life.

Easter Vigil - 28 We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Assembly bursts in with the CELTIC ALLELUIA as the Candle is removed from the Font. The Assembly then sings THE LIGHT OF CHRIST while members of the MGC “spread the light.” 8 Candle lighters (Youth) approach the Paschal Candle. Co-Presider Right lights the tapers of Candle lighters from the Mortuary side. Co-Presider Left, those from the Sacristy side. The Lighters descend to the assembly and light the candles of Greeters and Collectors who, in turn, light candles of those at the end of the pews. When the BIC sees that the lighting is near completion she says:

BIC On behalf of the Parish Community of Our Lady of Remedies, Malate, we would like to welcome our candidates for the Sacrament of Initiation. You have been faithful in your response to the invitation of Christ and the Church to come to the Waters of Baptism, the Oil of Anointing, the public profession of your Faith and the Table of the Lord. Easter Vigil - 33 Intro to the Our Father As sons and daughters of the Father let us pray to him the prayer taught us by our Risen Lord.

Deliver us Deliver us, Lord, from every evil and grant us in our day the peace which our Lord Jesus brought to the apostles on Easter Day. To make us into your new people keep us free from sin and strengthen us to face the trials of life, as we await in hope the coming in glory of the Risen Lord, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace Lord Jesus Christ, on Easter Sunday evening you appeared to your frightened and disheartened disciples and said to them: ‘Peace be with you.’ Then you showed them your wounded hands and side, and they were filled with joy. Grant that we who have heard the message of Easter may enjoy the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live for ever and ever.

The peace of the Risen Lord be with you always.

Exchange of Peace A. Let us now offer the Master’s greeting to one another. B. Today in Russian Churches Christians greet one another like this. One person says: Christ is Risen! Easter Vigil - 34 and the neighbor replies: Christ is truly risen! You might like to try this as we greet one another today.

Optional Prayer to accompany the Breaking of Bread “When Jesus was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him in the breaking of bread.” [Luke 24:30-31]

Invitation to the Communion This is the Risen Lord, our Paschal Lamb that was slain. Happy are we if we can recognize him in the broken bread and shared cup that we receive at this altar-table.

Easter Vigil - 35 The Parish Priest now thanks all who helped during Holy Week.

A group of dancers now interprets the final song. A Cantor sings the verse; the Assembly sings the Refrain.

I Danced in the Morning

(Refrain) Dance then wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the dance, said he, And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

I danced in the morning when the world was begun, And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; At Bethlehem I had my birth. Ref.

I danced for the scribes and the pharisees, But they wouldn’t dance, and they wouldn’t follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; They came with me and the dance went on. Ref.

I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; The holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, And left me there on a cross to die. Ref.

I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone; But I am the dance and I still go on. Ref.

They cut me down and I leap up high; I am the life that’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you live in me; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. Ref.

#1 C r e a t i o n

If this will be used the Presider may wish to update the Institution Narrative to conform to the words in the new ROMAN MISSAL Blessed are you, strong and faithful God. All your works, the height and the depth, echo the silent music of your praise.

In the beginning your Word summoned light: night withdrew, and creation dawned. As ages passed unseen, waters gathered on the face of the earth and life appeared.

When the times at last had ripened and the earth grown full in abundance, you created in your image man and woman, the crown of all creation.

You gave us breath and speech, that all the living might find a voice to sing your praise. So now, with all the powers of heaven and earth, we chant the ageless hymn of your glory:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

All holy God, how wonderful the work of your hands! You restored the beauty of your image when sin had scarred the world. Easter Vigil - 37 As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own and filled them with longing for a peace that would last and for a justice that would never fail. Through countless generations your people hungered for the bread of freedom. From them you raised up Jesus, the living bread, in whom ancient hungers were satisfied. He healed the sick, though he himself would suffer; he offered life to sinners, though death would hunt him down. But with a love stronger than death, he opened wide his arms and surrendered his spirit.

Father, let your Holy Spirit move in power over us and over our earthly gifts of bread and wine, that they may become the body + and blood of Christ.

On the night before he met with death, Jesus came to table with those he loved. He took bread and blessed you, God of all creation; he broke the bread among his disciples, and said: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT IT: THIS IS MY BODY WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

When supper was ended, he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to you, God of all creation; he passed the cup among his disciples, and said: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT: THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING COVENANT. IT WILL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR ALL SO THAT SINS MAY BE FORGIVEN. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

Easter Vigil - 38 Easter Vigil - 39 If this text is used then the Presider will have to ensure that the Acclamations are updated in conformity to the revised ROMAN MISSAL

A. Praise to you. Lord Jesus. Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. B. Christ is the bread of life. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. D. Jesus Christ is Lord. Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. you are the Savior of the world.

Father, we commemorate Jesus, your Son, as we offer you this sacrifice. Death could not bind him, for you raised him up in the Spirit of holiness and exalted him as Lord of creation. May his coming in glory find us ever-watchful in prayer, strong in love, and faithful to the breaking of the bread. Rejoicing in the Holy Spirit, your whole Church offers thanks and praise together with N., our Pope, and N., our bishop. We pray for those here present and all whose lives bring hope to this world. Lord of the living and the dead, awaken to the undying light of pardon and peace those fallen asleep in faith, especially (N. and) those who have died alone, unloved, and unmourned. Gather them all into communion with Mary, the Mother of God,

Easter Vigil - 40 and with all your saints. Then, at last, will all creation be one and all divisions healed, and we shall join in singing your praise through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. AMEN.
