A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr. With deepest respect, we pay homage and tribute to Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr. WHEREAS, it is with heavy hearts and deep sadness when we reflect upon the Marine helicopter accident along the Southern California coast on Sunday, May 11, 1997, that took the lives of four United States Marine Corps servicemen; and WHEREAS, Kentucky's native son, Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr., was aboard the helicopter that fateful day; and WHEREAS, this honorable body, representing the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, mourns the grief and suffering afflicted upon the family and friends of Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr.; and WHEREAS, Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr., was the adored son of Carolyn Barnes and Paul Douglas Barnes, Sr., and the loving brother of Shannon Barnes and L.W. Barnes; and WHEREAS, Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr., graduated from Anderson County High School in 1988, and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in history, after which time he entered the United States Marine Corps as a second lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr., brought to his community and to this great nation the enthusiasm and optimism he displayed throughout his life; and WHEREAS, a life spent worthily should be measured by deeds, not years, and through his compassion, self-sacrifice, enthusiasm, and genuine love and concern for his fellow man, Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr. is worthy of the highest commendation; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr., has left a void that will be difficult to fill, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: Section 1. This honorable body expresses its most profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr., and does extend to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy. Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr. Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Tom Buford for presentation to the family of Captain Paul Douglas Barnes, Jr.
