1. Grant Agreement Number: 04-175-555-0

2. Project Title: Determination of Sources of Organic Matter and Nutrients in the San Joaquin River 3. Project Purpose – Problem Being Addressed: The project generally consists of utilizing a technique of combined isotopic and chemical mass balance approaches to characterize and differentiate various sources of organic matter and nutrients from different land uses to the San Joaquin River (SJR). In specific, the objectives of the project are:  Determining the relative spatial and temporal contributions of different sources of nutrients to the SJR - Delta – San Francisco Bay system, with special focus on the critical reach upstream of Vernalis;  Quantifying the relative contributions of different Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) fractions (algae, ammonia, non-algal organic matter, etc.) in various areas of the SJR to the loads transported to the Deep Water Shipping Channel (DWSC);  Determining the linkages between specific sources of nutrients and the resultant BOD produced;  Determining what specific BOD fractions are the major causes of oxygen consumption in the DWSC, and where they are produced; and  Developing, implementing, and validating the usefulness of various isotopic tools for identifying, monitoring, and assessing the impacts of point and non-point nitrate and organic matter pollutants to the SJR.

4. Project Goals

a. Short-term Goals: to test the usefulness of several new isotope techniques for addressing local problems

b. Long-term Goals: to identify and quantify point and non-point sources to the river-delta-bay ecosystem
