SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCHES PRESENTED BY SFMOMA AND SFJAZZ TO CELEBRATE THE ART OF ROMARE BEARDEN

What In celebration of the exhibition The Art of Romare Bearden, SFMOMA will offer a series of Sunday jazz brunches in partnership with SFJAZZ—the San Francisco Jazz Organization. Guests will enjoy a sumptuous buffet brunch of traditional Southern fare infused with the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance while listening to live jazz by some of the Bay Area’s top performers. Jazz musicians have frequently inspired and been inspired by visual artists. The affinity that Romare Bearden (1911–1988)—one of the most vibrant and visionary American painters of the twentieth century—felt for jazz music is reflected in many of his paintings and collages currently on view at SFMOMA. Caterer Betty Zlatchin is basing her creations on recipes from the cookbook What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking, believed to be the first cookbook by an African American and perhaps the only one by a former slave. It was first published in 1881 in San Francisco by Abby Fisher, a caterer to the city’s elite. The menu will include scrambled eggs with chives; French toast with powdered sugar and orange maple syrup; southern-style baked ham with cloves, apricots and pineapple; homemade biscuits and cornbread twists; and sweet potato pie, pecan pie, and chocolate layer cake by Beth’s Fine Desserts, Inc.
