Dear Parent or Guardian, You are receiving this letter because you currently have a student at Hood River Valley High School in our Keys math course. Keys Math is designed to support students who are at risk of not meeting the Essential Skill Area of Mathematics as defined by the state of Oregon. Our KEYS math teacher, Mr. Blackman will be working with students in KEYS Math to improve their math skills. Additionally he will work with the students to improve their test taking and graphing calculator skills. Passing either ACT work key test at level 5 or higher, PSAT math section 45 or higher, SAT math section 450 or higher, ACT 19 or higher, or 2 formal written work samples are necessary means for completing the Essential Skill of Mathematics requirement. This Essential Skill area must be met in order to receive a high school diploma; therefore, it is critical for students to actively engage in improving their math skills while outside of school in addition to the work they are doing during the school day. All KEYS math students are signed onto an online math program called IXL.com. This online program allows student to practice the exact Oregon State Mathematics Standards required to pass the OAKS test and meet the Essential Skill of Mathematics. Students are assigned to work on IXL.com outside of the classroom for at least 30 min per day as homework. While at school, all students can access the Internet before classes, during lunch, and after school in the library. Mr. Blackman’s classroom, where they can get homework help or work on math skills on IXL.com, is open to all KEYS students from 7:30-3:45 All KEYS Math students will begin focusing on work samples items that are another mode of testing to meet state standards.

If you have any questions about the keys math class, your student’s progress, how to access IXL.com at home, tutoring, or have any other questions, please email [email protected] or call 541-386-4500 ext. 4660
