DATE: February 20, 2004 RE: March 2, 2004 Meeting
TO: San Diego School-to-Career Youth Council
FROM: Kelly Henwood Director of Youth Programs
SUBJECT: YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD UPDATE
INFORMATIONAL ITEM-NO ACTION REQUIRED
The Youth Advisory Board subcommittee of the Youth Council has conducted regular monthly meetings since it’s inception in June 2003. Currently, there are 6 serving members of the committee. Topics discussed in recent meetings have included the following issues:
Addressing challenges related to recruitment of additional members (especially older Out-of-School youth). Members felt that while community presentations by staff have been informative, the response has been minimal. Going to where youth are to conduct interviews, increased follow-up with interested youth, and flyer distribution at local community colleges are options presented to assist the process. Also, current members joining staff on recruitment presentations. Members representing the YAB at a National Youth conference in Washington D.C. and at the ‘All Youth One System’ California Workforce Association (CWA) annual youth conference in Palm Springs. The two members attending the CWA conference also participated in facilitating a workshop on building a Youth Advisory Board. Next steps for the mentoring plan presented at the Youth Council retreat on November 25, 2003. Members discussed matching up Youth Council members that signed up to volunteer as possible mentors. Reviewing the youth involvement section of the WIA Year-Long Youth Request for Proposal. Questions raised included that while the section looked good, the key was could programs really follow-through with all they promised to do and would they truly include youth in the program development work? Planning surrounding two group projects: 1) a community service project; and 2) a Youth Advisory Board retreat.
The next scheduled meeting of the Youth Advisory Board is scheduled for March 29, 2004 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the San Diego Workforce Partnership downtown offices at 1551 Fourth Avenue, Ste. 800.
