Do your work on this handout – you should not need more space.
The test papers are to be handed in no later than 4:00 P.M. or two hour after we start, whichever is later. Approach the solutions of the problems with this time limit in mind It is unfair to your fellow students who hand in their papers on time to use more time than they had.
The test is open notes and open book. Use your calculator or laptop if needed.
If you want to ask a question, come to me and ask me. If you want to borrow your neighbor’s calculator, ask me to do it for you. No talking to your neighbors.
Move on to the next problem if you are stuck.
Good luck, I hope you all do well.
Page 1 of 7 Pages ISE 310L Spring 2010 GEZA BOTTLIK Final 5/10/2010 Problem No. 1 Describe how you would design a distribution warehouse space of 50,000 sq.ft in a single story building with 18 foot ceilings and what kind of equipment you would use. Most of the goods come in on pallets that are 48”x36”. The average length of stay is 10 days with large variations. The pallets are not broken down or changed while they are in the warehouse. There are hundreds of different products, only one kind of product per pallet. The load heights vary from 3’ to 5’. The most unpredictable variable is the total number of pallets to be stored. You estimate that as many as 10,000 pallets could be in the warehouse at a given time. (15 points)

Problem No. 2 The flow between departments and the area required for each department are given. The building is 60’ by 50’. Decide on a method and then create a reasonable layout with it. Then improve on it with a method of your choice, but be sure to describe your method and give the amount of improvement. (25 points)
Page 3 of 7 Pages ISE 310L Spring 2010 GEZA BOTTLIK Final 5/10/2010 Problem No. 3 U shaped production lines and manufacturing cells have become very popular during the last twenty years because they halve the average travel time for workers dealing with multiple stations along the line. The cell shown below consists of six stations and materials have to be moved among them in the proportions shown below. For simplicity, facing machines are assumed to share a pickup and delivery point and a single person does all the moving of the material. The machines are all the same size with zero clearance between them, with their pickup and delivery points located at the center. How would you rearrange these machines to attempt to minimize the work for the person? Show your work and logic. How close do you think you got to an optimum? (20 points)

There are two delivery points {0,0,0,-2,-3,-4,-2,-5,-3} and {-2,-2,0,0,0,0,0,-4} and one loading point {6,0,0,7,0,8,5,1,0}. How many units must a tote be able to hold? (10 points)
