Abdominal ultrasound
Definition Abdominal ultrasound is an imaging procedure used to examine the internal organs of the abdomen including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys. The blood vessels to some of these organs can also be evaluated with the use of ultrasound techniques.
The ultrasound machine sends out high-frequency sound waves that reflect off body structures to create a picture. Unlike with x-rays, there is no ionizing radiation exposure with this test.
How the Test is Performed The test is done in the imaging department. You will be lying down for the procedure. A water-based conducting gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined to help with the transmission of the sound waves. The ultrasound transducer (a handheld probe) is then moved over the abdomen.
You may be asked to move to other positions so the health care provider can examine different areas. You may also be asked to hold your breath for short periods of time during the examination.
The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes.
How to Prepare for the Test You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. You will need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined. Mammogram (those above 35 years)
Definition A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breasts. It is used to find tumors and to help tell the difference between non-cancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) disease.
For more information please visit our Website on www.karenhospital.org 5 Email: [email protected] Tel: 6613169/0736200001/3, 0726222001/3 Mobile: 0721452938 P.O Box 74240-00200 Nairobi How the Test is Performed You will be asked to undress from the waist up and will be given a gown to wear. You be standing as the test is been performed.
One breast at a time is rested on a flat surface that contains the x-ray plate. A device called a compressor will be pressed firmly against the breast to help flatten out the breast tissue.
The x-ray pictures are taken from several angles. You may be asked to hold your breath as each picture is taken.
How to Prepare for the Test Do not wear deodorant, perfume, powders, or ointments under the arms or on the breasts on the day of the mammogram. These substances may obscure the images. Remove all jewelry from your neck.
Notify your health care provider and the radiologist if you are pregnant or breast-feeding
Ultrasound - Pelvis
Definition A pelvic ultrasound provides pictures of the structures and organs in the lower belly or pelvis.
How the Test is Performed The test is done in the imaging department. You will be lying down for the procedure. A clear, water-based conducting gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined to help with the transmission of the sound waves. The ultrasound transducer (a handheld probe) is then moved over the abdomen.
You may be asked to move to other positions so the health care provider can examine different areas. You may also be asked to hold your breath for short periods of time during the examination.
The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes.
How to Prepare for the Test A full urinary bladder is required thus drink four to six glasses of liquid about an hour before the test to fill your bladder.
Electrocardiogram; ECG
Definition An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart.
How the Test is Performed You are asked to lie down, and electrodes are affixed to each arm and leg and to your chest. This requires cleaning the site and, if necessary, shaving or clipping hair. The standard number of leads attached is 12.
For more information please visit our Website on www.karenhospital.org 6 Email: [email protected] Tel: 6613169/0736200001/3, 0726222001/3 Mobile: 0721452938 P.O Box 74240-00200 Nairobi You are usually required to remain still, and you may be asked to hold your breath for short periods during the procedure. The results are recorded on graph paper.
How to Prepare for the Test Before the ECG, tell your health care provider if you are taking any medications.
There are no restrictions for food or fluids. However, ingestion of cold water immediately before an ECG may produce changes in one of the waveforms recorded (the T wave). Exercise (such as climbing stairs) immediately before an ECG may significantly increase your heart rate.
You may be asked to remove all jewelry and to wear a hospital gown.
Considerations
It is important to be relaxed and relatively warm during ECG recording. Any movement, including muscle tremors such as shivering, can alter the tracing.
Treadmill (stress) test
Definition An exercise stress test is a screening tool to test the effect of exercise on your heart. The test gives a general sense of how healthy your heart is.
How the Test is Performed You will walk or pedal on an exercise machine while the electrical activity of your heart is measured with an electrocardiogram (ECG), and blood pressure readings are taken. This will measure your heart's reaction to your body's increased need for oxygen.
The test continues until you reach a target heart rate, unless complications such as chest pain or an exaggerated rise in blood pressure develop. You will continue to be monitored for 10 - 15 minutes after exercising, or until your heart rate returns to baseline.
How to Prepare for the Test You must not eat, smoke, or drink beverages containing caffeine or alcohol for 3 hours before the test.
You should continue all medications unless instructed otherwise. Wear comfortable shoes and loose clothing to allow exercise.
Tell your doctor if you are taking sildenafil citrate (Viagra) and have taken a dose within the past 24 hours. This is necessary because nitroglycerin, which is sometimes given during a stress test to relieve chest pain, should not be given to a person who has For more information please visit our Website on www.karenhospital.org 7 Email: [email protected] Tel: 6613169/0736200001/3, 0726222001/3 Mobile: 0721452938 P.O Box 74240-00200 Nairobi recently taken Viagra, since the combination can cause a serious drop in blood pressure.
Echocardiogram
Definition Echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than x-ray image and involves no radiation exposure.
How the Test is Performed A trained sonographer performs the test, then a heart doctor interprets the results. An instrument that transmits high-frequency sound waves called a transducer is placed on your ribs near the breast bone and directed toward the heart. The transducer picks up the echoes of the sound waves and transmits them as electrical impulses. The echocardiography machine converts these impulses into moving pictures of the heart.
Echocardiogram works well for most patients and allows doctors to see the heart beating and to visualize many of the structures of the heart. Occasionally, your lungs, ribs, or body tissue may prevent the sound waves and echoes from providing a clear picture of heart function. If so, the sonographer may inject a small amount of material (contrast) through an IV to better see the inside of the heart.
How to Prepare for the Test There is no special preparation for the test.
CHEST XRAY
Definition A chest x-ray is an x-ray of the chest, lungs, heart, large arteries, ribs, and diaphragm.
How the Test is Performed The test is performed the hospital radiology department by an x- ray technician. Two views are usually taken: one in which the x-rays pass through the chest from the back (posterior-anterior view), and one in which the x-rays pass through the chest from one side to the other (lateral view). You stand in front of the machine and must hold your breath when the x-ray is taken.
How to Prepare for the Test Chest x-rays are generally avoided during the first six months of pregnancy. You should also remove all jewelry.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE
1. Eat a fat-free meal on the evening before the test.
2. Drink six glasses of liquid about an hour before the tests to fill your bladder.
