This location has four approved training places. The training posts are usually based at the Headquarters building, Walshaw House (see above).
Introduction
East Lancashire PCT has a population of approximately 380,000, with a substantial part in deprived urban areas (former mill towns). There is also a large rural area in the Ribble Valley. Overall mortality rates are substantially above regional and national averages.
East Lancashire tPCT offers wide general training experience in public health. This includes needs assessment; rural and urban settings; issues of health inequality (deprived populations and ethnic minorities); health promotion and preventive medicine; emergency planning; clinical effectiveness and priority setting; clinical governance; planning and commissioning of acute, community and intermediate health care; partnership working and joint commissioning; applied research and development.
Organisation and Facilities
The PCT has a number of sites, including offices, primary care buildings and community hospitals. The staff of the public health directorate work mainly from the Headquarters building.
The important facilities available for trainees include:-
Designated offices Secretarial support Computer network with full NHS net and internet access Standard public health data sets available via computer network Meeting rooms Support from Systems Intelligence team Access to dedicated health information support team (off-site) Library with current journals and help with literature searching (off- site)

Continuing Education and Audit
There is a newly established programme of education and information sharing meetings to which trainees are invited. In addition, a wide range of public health seminars is available within Cumbria and Lancashire and the North West. There are also programmes of post- graduate medical education at the local hospitals in Blackburn and Burnley, including sessions aimed at primary care.
