The central idea is that the Servant’s weakness will lead to vindication, not only for himself, but for all people. The sense of sacrifice in the Servant’s suffering is alluded to in the use of the word for shame, guilt or a guilt offering, terms which are often linked to the priestly rituals in the Jerusalem Temple. The favourable outcome is presented as vision (in the Jerusalem Bible ‘light’ is added following some other ancient versions) and satisfaction. Right relationship is restored by the lifting off (removal) of the taint of iniquity. Equity or justice is established through the abasement of the Servant. The sense can be linked to Resurrection. Second Reading (Heb 4:14-16) These verses exhort the listeners to approach the risen Lord with confidence. The background of this exhortation lies in the freedom which members of the ancient city council had in their contributions to discussion, similar to that which is called parliamentary privilege in modern democracy. In the same way, Christians are envisaged as having a great dignity and liberty in speaking to the Lord. They are sure of a hearing as the glorious Lord is one who has overcome. The Lord has known weakness and out of his experience, shared with weak humanity, can offer mercy. The Christian will never lack suitable support at the time of need. This is the pledge of grace given to those who have the boldness to ask. Gospel (Mk 10:35-45) This segment of Mark comes at the end of the account of the journey towards Jericho and Jerusalem, in the course of which Jesus three times predicts his passion and resurrection. Each prediction is followed by an expression of misunderstanding by the disciples and a subsequent instruction by Jesus on an aspect of discipleship. The present section follows on from the third prediction and shows the misunderstanding of James and John, who want privileged places in Jesus’ mysterious Kingdom. The summary of discipleship teaching is that service is the criterion of the true disciple in imitation of Jesus who uses his power to liberate his people from sin and death. This type of activity has been characteristic of the work of Jesus in the early part of the gospel, which lays the foundation for Peter’s great confession: ‘You are the Christ’ (Mk 8:27). Peter’s acknowledgement is the fruit of his having seen Jesus use his power to respond to the needs of others in sickness, fear, hunger and many other situations of weakness. The picture of Jesus’ identity is developed as he is seen as the Christ who goes to the cross as the ransom which liberates from the power of evil. The disciple is invited to take up the cross through serving the needs of others and bringing the reality of love to the broken human situation.
