The Center for Montessori Teacher Education Students find this conducive to concentrated offers the following accredited program which, study and meditation. upon successful completion leads to an ACADEMIC PHASE: American Montessori Society (AMS) Early Phase I – Summer Intensive Childhood or Associate Early Childhood July 10 – 28, 2006 (127 hours) Credential. Non-AMS accredited Montessori teachers with a college degree may obtain an Curriculum Areas Presented: AMS credential by working with the Center through a special certification program. Everyday Living Sensorial This course presents the Montessori philosophy, Language theory, teaching and strategies in the light of Math modern child development and developmental Montessori Philosophy psychology. Child Development Observation (guided by staff) TIME SCHEDULE: Classroom Management In the initial summer phase, the student is introduced to Montessori philosophy and child Phase II – Weekend Seminars development, observation skills and classroom Friday: 4:00 – 9:00 PM management: Pivotal knowledge for this Saturday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM program. The didactic materials and exercises Sunday: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM for Everyday Living are taught in this phase. The lessons in Sensorial, Language and Math are September Seminar: started at this time. In the 10 monthly weekend Everyday Living seminars that follow, the student is given the Language basic lessons in a sequence timed to the development of a usual Montessori class. The October Seminar: didactic materials and exercises for sensorial Language activities, language development, growth of Child Development analytical and mathematical thinking, geography, Parent Teacher Conferences art, music and the natural sciences are presented in full sequence with the rationale behind these November Seminar: materials explained. PRACTICUM PHASE: (INTERNSHIP) “ The function of the Practicum Phase is to provide for the student a supervised teaching and learning experience and a period of observation, internalization, and further study, to bring together the theory and practice of Montessori education.” (AMS Practicum Booklet)

The well defined practicum is a school year of student teaching in a classroom of 3, 4 and 5 year olds, where the student can experience the healthy growth and development of the children and the class. Internship sites are available throughout the United States. The student works with guidance of an AMS certified teacher in an approved Montessori school. The student negotiates the stipend for the year with the practicum site. During this time the student takes an active role as an evolving professional in a half-day class as an observer, participant and implementer.

During the year an area representative of the Center will serve as a supportive Consulting Teacher and classroom observer of the student. Our monthly seminars offer frequent contact with program staff and the opportunity for discussion and feedback with fellow interns and other Montessorians. The Center works closely with each student, the school, Supervising Teacher and Consulting Teacher so as to provide a complete and through educational experience.

TUITION: Early Childhood Program For Certification: $4,550.00

Academic Phase only: $3,350.00

In order to attend the program, all fees and tuition must be paid before the program begins.

The Center offers a Deferred Payment Plan, which allows students to make monthly payments. The Deferred Payment Plan for the Early Childhood course requires students to put a down payment of $2,000.00 before the course begins and the balance of the tuition is carried with a 6% interest.

FEES: AMS & CERTIFICATION The student is responsible for $200.00 toward the AMS and MACTE fees. These fees entitle the student to an intern membership in the Society for two years and cover credential fees for one level.

BOOK AND SUPPLIES: Books and supplies are the responsibility of the student. A required reading list is sent as early as possible so required reading can be completed and assimilated.

PRESENTERS: Presenters for each area are chosen for their expertise in the curriculum area. The experienced staff includes Cathy Beemer, Kitty Bravo, Diane Hamburg, Warren McPherson, Madeleine Piat-Landolt, Beth Rice, Susan Hoadley Smith, Lisa Wallace and Ceres Schroer York. CENTER FOR MONTESSORI Cathy Beemer, summer phase On-Site Coordinator, has worked with the Center for the TEACHER EDUCATION last fourteen years and enjoys a national NORTH CAROLINA reputation as a Montessori curriculum presenter. She has a broad expansive view of both the Business Office Montessori Early Childhood and Elementary curriculums and is known for her dynamic and comprehensive workshops, and in addition to her 179 D’Ango Circle teacher education work, she spends her daytime Angier, North Carolina hours as a Consulting and classroom teacher. 27501

Ceres Schroer York, Director of the North Carolina program has been involved with AMS since 1963; her experience includes the founding Teaching Site of three Montessori schools in Illinois, New York and North Carolina. Ceres Schroer York 5617 Sunset Lake Road holds both an AMS Early Childhood and Holly Springs, NC Elementary credential as well as Master Degrees 27540 in Mathematics and Liberal Studies and has been a Montessori Classroom teacher since 1969. As a Mathematics specialist, Ceres Schroer York is known as a Montessori Teacher educator and AMS seminar workshop presenter. Ceres DIRECTOR Schroer York is involved nationally with the AMS Teacher Education Committee.
